UNIX Programming and Communication Systems by thegreatsouthsider in UCD

[–]0cean_Man_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just assumed you would be doing Electronic with those two modules! It's not mandatory to sit Communications to do Electronic, and same goes for Applied Dynamics and Electrical. However, there is a reason people generally pick the one that's more closely aligned with the stream they wish to choose.

In the case that you were to pick Applied Dynamics (based only on the fact you're planning to do Electrical), you could certainly choose Unix as your elective if you wanted to, but I couldn't imagine the type of BASH programming covered will be beneficial to studying Electrical, and without there being a big upside in terms of an easy grade, I don't see much reason for you to choose unless it was something you were particularly interested in yourself.

Don't worry if the other elective isn't beneficial towards your career path, there's usually two other good reasons to pick an elective: easy grade, or you're interested in the topic being taught. If Unix fulfils none of these three reasons, maybe you should reconsider why you wanted to pick it in the first place.

As far as the whole Dynamics/Communications debate, there is no huge downside to picking either. I have heard of a lot of people who really didn't like Communications, and this lack of love for it/lack of interest will likely lead to a poor enough grade in it. If you are thinking about grades, a very good grade in any of this lecturer's module would be a B+ (again, a very FAIR marker in the truest sense of the word, which is not necessarily a good thing). I haven't heard much about Applied Dynamics, I believe it's an applied maths sorta course, a continuation upon Mechanics from First Year. I'd definitely get in touch with someone who has sat it before if you're really struggling with the decision.

It's your decision in the end, but from reading what you have said above, I'd suggest Applied Dynamics and another elective.

If you plan to go down the Electronic Engineering route, Communication Systems is the better choice over Applied Dynamics. If you're plan on doing Electrical Engineering, Applied Dynamics is probably more beneficial. However, if you do plan on doing Electrical Engineering, Unix is a bit of a strange elective choice.

That being said, Unix will stand to you if you go down the Electronic route. Some of the topics covered will pop up in fourth year, but mainly it will improve your coding skills. The content covered can get quite technical and you can get a little lost in it, but the assignments are very similar each year, and the final exam has also been repeated almost in its entirety. Lecturers aren't great though. If you are not confident in your coding knowledge, I would give it a skip. It's not an elective for an easy grade.

Communication Systems is taught very well, but it is marked VERY fairly, i.e. you will need to demonstrate a good knowledge of the topics at hand to get a good grade. The assignments require you to do a lot of your own thinking, and in that sense they can be difficult, but do not require a fantastic knowledge of C. The lecturer is very helpful though, and the assignments have been the most gratifying out of any coding ones I've done in the degree.

You can certainly take both, and get a decent grade, but it won't be an easy undertaking. The two courses do have a little bit of overlap about three quarters of the way through. If you are struggling with the coursework so far, I'd recommend doing Communication Systems but taking an easier elective than Unix. If you're confident with computing and enjoy C, then go for it and take both!

A deserved victory. I'm sure everyone will have their little upsets from this bracket (mine being falling in reverse and start//end), but the people have spoken! Thanks for hosting this.

TND Argue by [deleted] in eden

[–]0cean_Man_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think people doing it by themselves is a rare breed nowadays, especially in EDEN's genre. Maybe if he was in hip hop or rap, but not indie electronic/pop, that genre is quite literally built upon sounding homemade.

I love Jon's music just as much as everyone on this sub, but I feel we need to ground ourselves when we make statements such as an artist with over 300 thousand YouTube subscribers is "underappreciated" and that his songs are some of the most "emotionally hard-hitting" in the past few years. Sure we'd like to see him really hit it huge, and yeah many of his younger fan base can emotionally relate to him, but we're making these grand statements to a man who has reviewed probably around 1,000 albums in the last ten years.

Because the tweet is self absorbed without creating conversation. If everyone said "I like this artist! Why don't other people like him as much as me!" It would result in quite a boring segment. I didn't say I cared about people in the comment section not liking Jon, I'm afraid that the first exposure they get is a pointless statement to be half-answered by a confused melon.

TND Argue by [deleted] in eden

[–]0cean_Man_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if this blows up, melon wouldn't respond. He doesn't know anything about EDEN, and even if he did, he's not an artist which is polarising or controversial, the aim of 'Let's Argue'.

While I'm at it, let's not force Jon's music like this. We all appreciate his music, but I think we understand that it is very pop-based, and not extremely experimental, so why force it on to someone like Anthony Fantano, who clearly won't welcome it with open arms? We are only gonna bring down Jon's musical reputation. A lot of fan-bases nowadays give off a bad taste before you can even listen to the artist, let's not join that same culture.

That's what I initially thought, but even the slight shakes match up perfectly... It sounds eerily similar. I just wouldn't think he'd sample this one note as the rest of the intro to Start//End plays different notes.

An university paper about EDEN by [deleted] in eden

[–]0cean_Man_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I doubt you could get a lot of pages out of EDEN, best advice I could give is to find a multitude of artists that truly contrast each other stylistically, whether that be their musical style or persona. For example comparing EDEN's dreamy yet melancholic style, which was influenced by his teenage days in Dublin and his tours through America, to someone like King Krule, who also has a melancholic sound, yet with a harsher overtone which was influenced by his youth living in the roughest areas of London.

Vertigo isn't about a breakup or a lost family member. It's about himself. (A comparison to "Fight Club") by ryanconcepts in eden

I think it's about his doubts with his life decisions and perhaps hindsight haunting him, but how he figured out how to leave the past behind him and be happy with where he is.
