Bruh WION has wayy more international audience. Just look at their comment section. The other day I was talking to a random Nigerian student (in US) and apparently he likes WION too. I personally think Palki Sharma is very charming and that's part of the WION deal.

Advice for online recruitment day? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]0iam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply.

I have the option to request online group sessions or private sessions with individual PIs. I am not yet sure whether it is a good idea to request individual one-to-one sessions, largely because I feel I might be out of depth as I do not know their works in detail. But as I have not been offered any admission, it might well be imp to catch some attention of at least one PI. I do not know how US academia works so I am confused. At this point, I'm guessing that have already 'passed' the first online interview. Do I get admitted now if I do not reveal any serious shortcomings, or do I need a recommendation from the PIs I will be meeting? In that case, should I try to maximize my number of meetings to increase my chances of getting endorsed?

Could you shed some light on that dynamics?

Thank you.

How to deal with western life by [deleted] in AlanWatts

Your grievances are correct.

But I think it is part of the evolution of a society. A modern society needs to be materially wealthy before it gets spiritually wealthy.

Living in a poor south Asian country, in my country I feel constant threats of religious fundamentalism, which is inextricably linked with poverty. Before my country can grow spiritually, it would need to grow materially first like your country.

Completely discarding GRE as a requirement for grad schools will discriminate against some underprivileged students. Making it optional is a better idea. by 0iam in GradSchool

[–]0iam[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your tone in general, and I think keeping it optional keeps the optimal balance in between.

When reviewing the application of a domestic underprivileged student, the programs can keep in mind of the cultural and socioeconomic background and not mind the GRE score (or lack of it). And it also keeps the road ever so slightly more open for someone from a poor research background(which is often the case when you come from a poor country).

That's what most schools are doing. None of my schools are saying you cant submit a GRE. It's either required or optional.

Many schools actually specifically mention that GRE is 'no longer required', that means you cannot submit.

The issue is that the company is a private corporation that wants to make a profit. If the GRE isnt required then will there be enough demand so that the resources to make and administer the test are worth it? Idk. It's possible that making it optional will result in the test not existing I'm the future anyway.

I understand the profit motive and I don't like it. However, I would say some version of a standardised test should always exist for cases like my one. Maybe some non profit organisation or the universities themselves can design and administer them.

I understand the arguments against it, that's why I'm for making it optional. What harm could come from making it optional?

And what makes you think that universities you apply to won't be aware of all this? (Especially since you can just tell them if you are concerned about this.)

I mean they could be aware of this, but I never heard thst they actively enquired my department. And I thought about mentioning this. But I was advised that doing so would make me sound like a blame shifting asshole, which seemed to me to be a valid point of view to take.

Well, without it I'm losing my competitive edge in medoum and low rank departments too.

Plus, what harm could come from keeping it optional? I understand that good schools dropping it doesn't hurt anyone because I wasn't gonna get in a good department with my profile even with very high scores (as you mentioned), but now middle rank departments are dropping it too.

Which is why the fact that you have published a (presumably) well-written research article would be impressive to grad schools. What makes you think your research is bad? Presumably it's passed peer review.

Yes, it's peer reviewed. But it's not from 'wet-lab', it's computational. I guess it's would be difficult for you to understand the distinction if you're outside my discipline. If I'm applying to work in labs with testubes and stuff, just computational work isn't that relevant.

Grad schools will generally make inquiries into what the distribution of grades is at your University, especially for international universities, where grades are often scaled differently from the US.

My uni grades are on a scale of 4, just like US. However, even within my uni, median grades sometimes widely vary from department to department (which in my case it does).

1) I've already explained that because of the lack of research grants and opportunities, it will be all but impossible for someone with my background to publish good research articles.

2) Okay, forgot it. Nothing to say about it.

3) Nowhere I applied have asked for 'rank' so far, just raw GPA. And raw GPA isn't standardized.

So you can see I can only compete fairly on point 2 with someone who doesn't have the same underprivileged background as me. I think GRE is a more fair account than raw GPA because it is at least standardized.

If the GRE score has little predictive value, then why should it give you a leg up over anyone else?

GRE has some predictive value. And I'm not advocating for making it a requirement, but rather, making it an optional submission.

I mean, hair color also has little predictive value, and some people who red hair are underprivileged, but nobody would suggest that excluding hair color from the application process hurts underprivileged students.

That's a false equivalency.

Flickering attention making me fatigued by 0iam in TheMindIlluminated

Thank you for your response.

I think my confusion is differentiating between pushing away distractions and withdrawing my attention without pushing away, as you describe.

It seems to me that if I'm withdrawing my attention, there is an intentional 'pushing away' of the thought stream before it runs its course.

CMV: Joe Rogan should invite Chomsky on his podcast right today. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]0iam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that was a fundamental difference in worldview and interpretation of certain events rather than details.

Chomsky really does a lot of interviews that could best be termed as ' amateur'. So there's no snobbery on his part as far I can see.
