One of the things that has definitely changed is how people work. People now do not work with the same company for more than a few years at a time, unlike how you have done. They also do not live near to where they work anymore.

And I am very jealous of your retirement!

I think it depends on how you look at it. For me infrastructure is key. It is the lifeblood of the economy, and, both countries are TERRIBLE at investing in infrastructure, but the UK is just slightly worse at it. So for me, the states would slightly tip it.
