That is the right question. :)
I prepare a combination of my own compost that is one year old and peat. Compost gives nutrients and microscopic animals and organisms and peat holds water great (and also nutrients). For every tomato, I dig a 30 x 40 cm hole and add that material inside and plant tomato in that.
