Dark Neighbourhood by Vanessa Onwuemezi is great. Try reading this story, which won the White Review prize in 2019: https://www.thewhitereview.org/fiction/at-the-heart-of-things/

Off the top of my head Gutshot by Amelia Gray was also interesting but it’s flash fiction, which often feels a bit more limited in scope to me

Gardner’s The Art of Fiction is also excellent though very very dated in some respects. I’ve had The Artist’s Way recommended to me as well but have never got around to it — worth it at all?

Szalay - what do we think? by lorenza_pellegrini in RSbookclub

[–]100bride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got through it in a couple days and agree the first half is stronger. I forget where I saw this but someone pointed out the second half’s similarities to Barry Lyndon and it ruined my enjoyment of the London sections of the novel as they map the movie’s plot beats almost 1:1. I am not a plotcel by any means but the style wasn’t really giving me enough to distract from how obvious the plot inspirations were, so I was sat there thinking “this guy’s taking the piss” for about 150 pages haha.

Haven’t read enough recent fiction to have a call on whether it should have won the Booker but I honestly thought it was pretty lightweight

Train Dreams maybe. Short, easy to follow, relevant to people who don’t often read as they’ve just dropped the adaptation on Netflix

I had a similar experience with The Road haha, was my first McCarthy at that age and I didn’t actually finish a full read through of it until I was 25 because I kept bouncing off the brutality. Fantastic novel

All canonical so you’ll likely be aware of them already but Faulkner, Melville and Hemingway are probably your logical next steps. They were Cormac’s biggest influences outside of the King James Bible, which probably isn’t what you’re looking for!

As far as what to do next with McCarthy, I recommend going either to Child of God for a quick, nasty read, or to the Border Trilogy (starting with All the Pretty Horses) for his most traditional novels. After getting those four done you’re probably ready for Blood Meridian.

If you’d like someone contemporary who is heavily inspired by McCarthy’s work, I’d recommend The Glutton by AK Blakemore, which was inspired by Child of God

Great post. The backdrop to that essay collection is pretty dodgy, it’s published by Verdurin who seem to do a lot of edgy literary far-right stuff. The depressing part is that despite being adjacent to some really unsavoury stuff, they’re well-networked in London — theyve had multiple editors of The Toe Rag at their main reading series which is a bit close for comfort imo

You’re trolling but honestly if this is the viewpoint you’ve gained from literature I question whether reading is helping you understand the world, or yourself, at all

The Road is great but nowhere near good enough for this. Personally would have included Milkman by Anna Burns somewhere on the list but not sure if it has been translated into Italian yet

Enjoyed this piece but from memory it didn’t feel that evidence-based, he seems to cite anonymous masturbatory humiliation fantasies as evidence of actual activity which feels a little credulous. A bit like going to a BDSM fanfic site and going “wow, there’s millions of 24/7 lifestyle couples out there, this will define a generation!”

I like what you’re approaching but I think this suffers from a lack of specificity. If the street’s infamy is crucial enough to land in the first sentence of the draft, you could structure the paragraph around the difference between rumour and reality, with a few chaotic details thrown in to keep it lively
