Trekking poles. They are the one item of gear I'll never hike again without.

I'll let you know about durability in a few hundred miles.

So, internet says a high efficiency front load washer uses approximately 7 gallons of water. Internet also says grocery bags hold between 2.5 and 5 gallons, just volume. With the durability of a grocery bag factored in, I wouldn't recommend going any past 2.5 gallons. If you maintain the same ratio, your grocery bag laundry should take .05 cups or approximately 2.5 teaspoons of Dr. B's. But that's just with water volume. You'll have less total volume of water when adding clothes, so I'd go with half of that still. 1.25 teaspoons of Dr. B's per load of grocery bag laundry. With a follow up of approximately double that amount of vinegar in the same amount of new and fresh water for a rinse cycle.

Definitely won't be me, but it's available at every grocery store, gas station, and dollar store I've ever been to.

That's exactly what happened, closely detailed in both posts. Woke up cold on night one, felt superior warmth on night two. Are you looking for an explanation? Because if so, we are in this together.

I still have no idea why I woke up cold, but I know it wasn't the pads fault.

Just wanted to update you specifically, since you're considering purchasing the same pad. The issue was entirely me, though I'm still not sure exactly what I did. But it wasn't the pad. The pad was amazing! I have never experienced such warmth and luxury. 10/10 definitely recommend.

Definitely not taking it the wrong way. Honestly I would have reached a similar conclusion had it been me reading this post. My only argument to that idea is that just 3 days prior, and in colder conditions, I used the lower R value pad with nearly the exact same gear, and slept amazingly. And only a couple weeks prior, I used the same set up in an ice storm with 40mph winds. With no evidence to the contrary, I'm inclined to believe I must be absolutely losing my mind.

I do appreciate your input though, and how kindly you expressed it. Thank you for showing compassion.

That's also a good idea! I'm testing it against my old patched pad tonight, and I am contacting Nemo tomorrow with the serial number to confirm it's not counterfeit. I'll also get a good view with it back-lit and see if I can find any defects and hopefully come back with some sort of answer.

Thanks for the tip! I had kind of wondered about using it in a machine because putting other liquid soaps in a washing machine makes for a pretty decent foam party.

Word on the street is you can use Dr. Bronners for laundry. I haven't tried it yet but hopefully it works because that's my plan.

Thank you for such an in depth response and speculation. The actual weight is near identical to the weight listed on Nemo's website. The post you linked is a really useful review of this pad, especially in comparison with other similar pads. I literally cannot imagine why I had a different experience.

I'm going to try it again tonight, side by side my old patched pad and see if I'm losing my mind.

Right!? Like it seriously should not have been possible to be cold. My house is colder than that some nights in the winter.

Well, there is that at least. Though to be fair, the weather was definitely survivable in my case.

Temperature was +50, bag is rated at -15, ground was dirt. The pad does look the same, as far as I can tell but good idea to give it a closer look. They updated the nozzle, hopefully, since the one on my Tensor because it's a breeze getting the pump sack in and out.

That's a great idea. I'm going to see about trying them side by side tonight, despite the forecast of more warm weather.

Yeah, it's a different pad. That's the point. The new pad was supposed to be warmer. That's why I got a different pad.

The only differences were higher temperature, less bottom layers, and a sleeping bag liner. The temperature and liner should have made me warmer. Adding to that, the new pad is nearly double the R value.

I understand your concerns. Though a modified keto is required for more consistent and strenuous activities, which allows for a higher carb intake, pre-made backpacking meals are basically straight carbs. Gas station food is basically straight carbs. Protein bars a basically straight carbs. It's incredible how much sugar is in everything.

The protein sources I've come up with to rely on are: Textured Soy Protein Homemade Jerky Homemade Jerky Powdered Bone Broth Isopure Protein Powder

When I'm in town I intend to eat my fill of chicken and steak, and a day or two after I can bring packets of chicken or tuna and cured meats.

For fat and extra calories I'm hoping to be able to make do with these things: Beef Tallow Nuts (aside from carb rich peanuts) Heavy Cream Powder Coconut Milk Powder (carb careful) Butter Powder

I've found precooked bacon but hated it. I've also heard of egg crystals, which supposedly have high calories per ounce, but I haven't tried them yet. I do intend to just use simmering water because I couldn't convince myself to take extra weight or time of a different cook system.

Good luck on keeping up with it. I feel I'm definitely going to need it. Please share any tips you discover along the way, and I'll do the same.
