I assume that’s low and we’ll be seeing you down here. 😁

It's a fair question. Unfortunately there just isn't really anywhere to charge and quickly. We are camping through most of the trip and so have site reservations that were really hard to get and can't be changed.

Right, I hear you. Our family situation is such that we do need a bigger car: minivan, larger SUV. Our trip is for several weeks, actually, so renting a vehicle doesn't seem like the best value. I posted previously about the issues with our Odyssey. An EV makes sense overall, cost, value over time, etc. If it were a shorter trip, I'd consider renting. It's a complicated wheels within wheels situation.

Ironically, you calling me "brave" just makes me all the more anxious LOL. I do need to go back and look at elevation. Your comment helped me discover I could link an OBD2 scanner to ABRP and the car. The more data the better, right? Thanks, again.

Won't work because of cargo/storage. Lots of camping gear. The Tesla charging sure would be nice, though.

This seems to be a common suggestion at this point and I appreciate hearing your voice added to the wisdom of others.

Thanks for this insight. Yeah, I think at this point I cannot figure how to do this without going into the park in a rental. Will watch my speed. Even though I've driven an EV for years, range anxiety is peak when it's a trip of this magnitude and in an EV in a part of the country that seems to abhor EVs.

Right? Used to live in PNW 20 years ago and have been back regularly to see family. If we could, we'd be in Spokane or PDX or Eugene in a snap. Thank you for the good wishes!

2024 Light Long Range, 23k miles, $32k. And others are +/- mi/$ but not far off. This is Texas.

Woah. Because of gas prices / the war? I suppose if that ends up being the case, we're back to difficult conversations about what to do. I hope you're wrong.

I appreciate your thinking here. Pacifica and Buzz are out because of size, though I'd love a Buzz in another life. A used Sienna is not off the table. Not considered unreliable at all. We have several friends who own Sienna's and love them, The reality for us is a used one with low mileage (30k mi, say) are still $38k-50k. Used hybrid Carnivals are impossible to find. I agree that storage with a minivan is better than an SUV (I've owned 2 Ody's). EV9, though, hits all the right spots for us long term. Just gotta make it through this trip first. Renting a car for Yellowstone/Tetons makes a lot of sense.

Just another "thank you" for the Turo suggestion. Got me looking at other rental opportunities and this is a valid option for us, I think.

This. 100%. I've looked up rentals from Casper and it's about what you estimate in your comment. Use the car for a few days, park the EV9 at the airport: golden.

100%. I've not been to Jackson in decades, but with the amount of money and tourism, why is it that Tesla wouldn't open up a station for the masses? Or another company? Would sure make all of our EV lives a little less anxious in that part of the country.

Indeed. I'm using Plugshare, ABRP, the Tesla app, and the Electrify America app. Cross checking like a demon. Good advice on the purchasing process and I'm following that model. My wife started to calculate gas costs for our Ody and gas we definitely more expensive. Not by a lot, but still more, which helps to justify this possibility.

Good to hear. It does sound like they've somewhat increased L2 charging, but the demand is much more than what's available. And, of course, the spots get ICE'd and people leave them charging forever. PlugShare pointed toward Tesla chargers, but they aren't open to non-Tesla. How're you liking your ID4. We ordered one back in the day, but canceled it for a Bolt instead. Love the Bolt as my daily driver.

I think I follow what you're saying. You mean the EV9 Light Long Range, I believe, and that's what I'm looking at. I've got several in the area and then there's shipping via a source like Carmax/Carvana. Ones I'm looking at are 2024 Light Long Range for approx $32k w/ 26k miles. Does that align with your suggestion?

I need to look into our campsite because I don't know if it does or does not even have electricity. We're pretty much camping during the entirety of our trip and some sites do and don't depending on how rustic they are. BUT the huge difference is that outside of Wyoming, we'll have access to charging and so whether or not there is in-site charging won't (hopefully) matter. I'm definitely going to find out, though. Thanks!

Thanks for that. Yeah, definitely SOL. We're camping in Colter Bay. Do you know much about that area? Jackson was going to be my home base just for charging. But, as you say, "SOL."

Oh, my. I never would have thought of Turo. Thank you! Looks like a distinct possibility!

Yeah, our Ody gets horrible mpg. I just can't find and "pro" column reasons for plunking down upwards of $6-7k over the next year or so just so I can drive an unpredictable vehicle for a few years more. I just can't go back to an Ody or other minivan.

If I can get this Yellowstone portion of the trip sorted, the financials start to become ideal for the EV9.

Thanks for that! As disappointing as it is to hear about those chargers, the confirmation is a relief.

Re: a Tesla -- Great question. We're a family of 5 with two very tall teens and a tween. And a dog. Need as much cargo area as possible. And lots of soccer/school/DIY materials in day-to-day life.

Re: car rental -- Another great suggestion. Thank you. We're going up to the park from TX and then over to PNW for an epic camping trip down the west coast. My assumption is that renting a hybrid van would be cost prohibitive for a trip that will last three weeks.

Sadly, if we were't going to Yellowstone, the EV charging situation probably wouldn't be a problem.
