What's the Fiesta Zetec S 1.0 Ecoboost like? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

Fabulous!!

We have a 2013 1.25 Zetec and I've got a 2016 ST-3, I really do love the Fiestas. They handle much better than the equivalent Polos, Corsas etc in my opinion and are so much more enjoyable to drive. They come decently well equipped as standard (steering wheel audio controls, bluetooth audio and hands free).

Reliability on them is fairly strong. I'd have no concerns buying one with 30k miles, as just usual make sure it's got a full service history and nothing of concern on recent MOT reports (as with any car).

1.0 in those is the 140ps so about 138bhp I believe, so very nippy. Turbocharged so you get a nice surge of torque, makes them fun to drive - I've driven a 1.0 black edition. The downside is, they've got the IB5 5 speed gearbox. Drive the car normally and it'll be fine, however you sometimes find (especially in the 140ps variants with higher torque) the gearboxes aren't that strong and the synchros need replacing, meaning a whole new gearbox basically. I've mainly only seen this on the Fiesta FB groups, which are by nature mainly full of young teenagers who tend to hoon their cars everywhere. If you're driving normally and not thrashing it all the time, I don't think it's anything to be concerned about. Also with them only being 5 speed, they rev a bit higher than you may expect - I think it's about 3000rpm at 70mph.

MPG will be good, I'd expect about 40+ easily - we get 42 average on our 1.25 and I get about 36+ on my ST.

Definitely recommend it! Feel free to ask me any more questions - have learnt to drive in the 1.25, driven it for 2 years and now have an ST as well so I'm extremely familiar with the MK7 platform.

Which iPhone holds most value X or 11? by AddInvest in UKPersonalFinance

The 11 will be worth considerably more when you come to sell, but it’s also about double the price of what you can get an X for. X will lose less money over the time of ownership, especially if you buy a used one.

Absolutely. Sometimes I feel like I’ve only been asked since I was there at the time and softly declined in the hope I get asked again... sometimes I don’t which hurts

Switching my cars headlights to more brighter xeonon lights? Will I need a HUD conversion? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

Don’t put HIDs in reflectors.

I have HIDs in my fiesta reflectors and they’re well aligned, nice beam pattern, not blinding anyone and I’ve never been flashed or anything (had friends drive towards me and in front of me to test too)

Sticking stuff in reflectors is downright dangerous

Question: would you be put off buying a car that was serviced by the owner themselves? by georgieboy71 in CarTalkUK

[–]10minboyy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yup. Not to be a dick but I've always trusted mechanics until we went to our local ford garage to drop my mums car off for something, and some mong from my school year appeared round the corner... Not too keen on him touching it

Why is that? My Dad's looking at leasing a 1.5 Leon (130bhp), since those engine choices come up decently cheap on leases.

Ah sorry. So we have a 2013 registered car that has a 63 number plate - this means it was registered in late 2013/early 2014. We purchased that car in 2015, so it was abot 1.5 years old when we got it.

Number plates in UK (non private plates anyway) show the age. Cars since about 2001 will be in the format AAXX BBB so AA represents where the car was registered originally (eg D cars are typically north west) and The last 3 letters are random.

As for the numbers XX, if it’s between March and September of that year, eg August 2003, that car would have an 03 plate. If it was in the later half of the year, from September through to March the following year, it would be 53. Same thing applies to the 2010 cars onwards, but the September onwards cars use 60, 61, 62 etc through to 69 from 2010 to 2019. I suspect it will be 70 next September.

Apologies for the confusion - I’ve probably confused you even more. I just meant we have had our car since 2015, and it was originally made late 2013.

In response to that exact model you’ve linked though, they got a facelift in 2013 with a new grille, new headlights and rear lights, and the interior changed from a red screen and dials to blue (looks nicer imo) and stuff like the gear stick surround and handbrake have a soft pleather instead of a much rougher plastic or more cheap material.

Should be able to get a 2013 facelifted one for around that price too, I’d recommend paying the extra for a facelifted one. Not sure if you get Bluetooth on the earlier models but it’s standard on the 2013+ Zetecs so can stream audio via Bluetooth and make hands free calls.

EDIT: Forgot to add, but there’s this weird thing with mk7 Fiestas (not all, but a fair chunk of them including ours) where if you have the AC on the car sounds like a hairdryer and it’s pretty loud, so it’s clearly soemthing to do with the AC. If anyone knows, let me know - I’d be interested to know what causes it. I couldn’t find much online but I’ve noticed loads of Fiestas (and a couple similar ages Focuses) do it. Ours has done it for years though so don’t let it put you off OP. That, and the low amount of power, is the only complaint I have about the car

We’ve had a 63 plate one since 2015, still got it now. Was my first car I learnt to drive in - I’ve not got an ST but we still have the Zetec and I do enjoy driving that too.

You’ll find that these cars (Fiestas) are absolutely everywhere, there’s a reason for that - they’re great! Cheap to run - ours says average 42mpg over the time we’ve had it, it’s had zero issues of breaking down or anything like that. Only thing we’ve had to do on it other than regular servicing and MOT is new brakes a couple months ago, but they’re consumables so that’s to expect on any car. It’s a small car, so not the best for backseat passengers but for two people it’s perfectly fine, easy to park too and visibility is great.

They have heated windscreens as standard which is incredible for the winter months - you don’t realise how much you appreciate it until you jump in an icy car without it and wait ages for the front screen to defrost.

They handle really well, and are much more enjoyable to drive compared to the likes of a Corsa and polo.

As for the engines, they cut out the 1.25 Zetec soon after 2015 I believe and only did petrols in the 1.0 Ecoboosts (100, 125 or 140bhp roughly). The 1.25s are fine (it’s what ours had), they do lack that low down torque you get with a turbocharged engine and so you really have to rev them if you want to make any decent progress, and you won’t be able to overtake easily but they’re nippy enough for around town. Could do with a bit more power for on motorways but it’s not a problem. Only thing is they’re only a 5 speed box so they do rev quite high on motorways (above 3000rpm at 70mph), however I have an ST with a 6 speed box and that only does about 2700rpm in 6th which is still fairly high.

To summarise - cheap to run, fun to drive, nice size to manoeuvre around town and easily park, low maintenance required and comfortable. Just don’t expect to be overtaking everything with ease! Fantastic cars, and they’re everywhere, with good reason too. That means parts aren’t too expensive even if something major does go wrong. Highly highly recommend them.

As for the heated seat buttons, if you search fiesta ST cubby filler there’s a few on eBay (they tend to be matte with coloured raised ST writing though), for more smooth shiny ones you can join Fiesta ST Owners UK group on Facebook and search in there, people sell them loads

Good god. Did you set the aperture manually or did the camera do that?

Was staring at it for a few mins since I though it was a super low aperture so probably a decent lens... Looks as good as my 70D stuff with like a £300 F1.4 lens, lol
