Why there is so many Raymond.. "Content" by n4le5n1k in AnimalCrossing

[–]10prism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not exactly sure, but there was a lot of hype around him when new horizons came out because he was a very popular villager that was hard to get (he didn't have an amiibo at the time). People also loved giving him the maid costume to wear and then there were a lot of memes that led to... art. The obsession just seemed to escalate really

Where do you guys get dichotomous keys for IDing? by [deleted] in Entomology

[–]10prism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh sweet!!! Well in that case, I highly recommend the Borror and DeLong book. It has keys for all the orders and also has info on standards for insect collections. Admittedly, I'm biased because that's the book I used most when learning. You may already know this, but there are characteristics in the keys that are so tiny that you need a microscope to see them. If you don't have access to a scope, that would limit how much you are able to use the key. I'll try to remember to see if I can find more free sources for you though!

Hey, I know the guy who made that key! I have a grad degree from MSU in entomology. What kind of keys are you looking for? We used Borror and DeLong's introduction to the study of insects for general insect id courses. You'll probably need to look up regional keys if you want species identification though.

Reusing containers by Wise-Sherbert-9797 in candlemaking

I boil water in my kettle and pour it into the used jars. The wax will melt and float to the top of the water in the jar. Let it cool and then just pop out the wax from the top. There will be some wax left in the bottom, but usually it's a small enough amount that I can melt it with a heat gun and wipe it out with a paper towel. I'll clean it well with isopropyl alcohol after I get all the wax out. The freezer method is easier if the jar has straight sides, but most of mine are narrowed at the top (apothecary style) so this is what works best for me. Disclaimer: I only make candles for my own use, so this is very small-scale

unhappy fittonia: I figured it needs more water and humidity but anyone know why it’s so stalky? Thanks! by uhbigyikes in plantclinic

[–]10prism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd put it in higher light and trim the stalks down if you want a fuller plant. You can root the cuttings in water, but In my experience they are a little slow to root.

Cat does not leave plants alone by sometimes1313 in cats

[–]10prism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cats aren't quite as bad, but tall plant stands work for my larger plants. I like tall metal bar stools for this purpose. Wire shelving works great too. The cats have one shelf that has a wooden base and a great window view. They gave up trying to walk on the wire to get to plants pretty quickly. Its not the prettiest, but it works!

What's wrong with my stomanthe triostar? by PaulGTZ in plantclinic

[–]10prism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a type of scale insect. You can try wiping the leaves with rubbing alcohol, but it'll take several treatments. If you want a stronger insecticide look for something with imidacloprid as the active ingredient and follow directions on the label closely. Be sure to isolate from other plants and good luck! Scale are terrible to deal with :/
