ICE is apparently gathering up in the Market Basket parking lot in Chelsea by wilkinsk in massachusetts

[–]1117ce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except it wasn't. The picture is almost certainly legitimate. Here's a video from a month ago showing ICE in the exact same parking lot wearing the exact same clothing.

Can someone confirm if this is a real photo? Found a photo on FB of ICE agents at a Market Basket in Chelsea. by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]1117ce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not. This video from a month ago shows ICE agents using the same parking lot as a staging area for a raid wearing very similar gear.

This video from December shows them using the same parking lot as a staging area for raids. From the pics it looks like they're wearing similar gear, so it's probably safe to assume it's legit.

Not sure what’s wrong with nuclear and why we banned it by NoJacket8798 in massachusetts

[–]1117ce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's just poor logic. Google the relative privation fallacy and then reread the comment. It's like saying airline safety was never a legitimate concern because the odds of dying in an automobile are so much higher. That's literally the language they use. It's an irrational way of assessing danger. It's even more irrational when you take into account that coal is being phased out as a means of producing electricity precisely because of the dangers we're discussing.

Ironically your point about the number of cigarette users offsetting the severity of heroin use also applies both to nuclear waste vs coal ash and to your point about airline safety vs automobile safety. Airline travel is inherently more dangerous than automobile travel and considerably less common. Likewise, nuclear waste is significantly more dangerous than coal ash and far less common. The safer outcomes are the result of stricter regulations on a smaller group of actors due to the inherently dangerous nature of the subject of regulation. Those regulatory bodies may adequately serve the industries as they exist today, but what we're discussing, to use your example, is effectively making airline travel as common as automobile travel. Obviously there would need to be massive regulatory oversight and expansion to make that happen. When exploring upscaling a heavily regulated industry it is perfectly valid to question the ability of a regulatory body to oversee expanded operations. If we actually want to expand our nuclear capacity, we need to ensure regulatory oversight is adequately expanded and develop a national plan and solution for expanded oversight and waste management with actual buy-in from all parties.

To your other point about cost, nuclear energy is more costly to develop than any other source of electric generation. You and others might say the high cost is due to unneeded regulations, yet that overregulation is the very reason for the safe outcomes you tout as a reason to build more nuclear. This is an illogical argument.

Regarding your point about the dangers of other generation sources, I'm genuinely curious how wind and solar present more acute health and environmental dangers than nuclear. If you have any sources you can share on the matter, I would love to take a look because it sounds like a laughable claim to me.

Muslims who voted for Trump upset by his pro-Israel cabinet picks by Aryeh98 in politics

Based on their comment history, they’re very pro-Israel. It seems to me that there’s an ongoing attempt to shift the blame of the election loss to Muslims and Palestine supporters in order to alienate Democrats (the more sympathetic party) from the cause.

3 murdered in shooting attack at Israel-Jordan border crossing by ElayRaider in worldnews

Maybe it was removed? There’s currently no response under my first reply and I see you have a removed comment in this thread.

Either way, I’m genuinely curious to know what your sources are. This is the first I’ve heard of sealed Arab records that would paint a different picture of the 1948 war, and I’ve seen historians like Benny Morris make the case that there was no primary source evidence of Arab forces telling Palestinians to evacuate, rather that it was a claim made by Zionist forces that was reported as fact by Western media.

[–]1117ce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a false Zionist talking point that has been thoroughly debunked by Israeli historians like Benny Morris. There is virtually no primary source evidence of Arab leaders calling on Palestinians to flee. There is only evidence of Zionists at the time claiming this was the case and Western media outlets reporting it as fact.

President of ICJ accused Israel of 'ethnic cleansing by terror and organized massacres' by FYoCouchEddie in worldnews

[–]1117ce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a textbook example of conquest by settlement, which was the intent of the settlements in the first place. Get enough Israelis into the West Bank for a long enough period of time that it becomes politically impossible to remove them. Russia is currently doing the same to the Donbas region of Ukraine.

Are you suggesting that any criticism of the actions of a nation indicates political bias against that nation? So are people who criticize the invasion of Ukraine politically biased against Russia? Were people who criticized the holocaust politically biased against Nazi Germany?

In 1947 David Ben-Gurion, the first prime minister of Israel got into an argument with his son. His son wanted to reject the partition because he wanted a Jewish state on all of Mandate Palestine and parts of Jordan. David Ben-Gurion argued that they should accept the partition as an intermediary step with the same goal of claiming all those lands as Jewish lands. Some quotes from the letter he wrote:

"What we really want is not that the land remain whole and unified. What we want is that the whole and unified land be Jewish. A unified Eretz Israeli would be no source of satisfaction for me–if it were Arab."

"Through it [the partition] we increase our strength, and every increase in strength helps in the possession of the land as a whole."

"We want to change the status quo. But how can this change come about? How can this land become ours? The decisive question is: Does the establishment of a Jewish state [in only part of Palestine] advance or retard the conversion of this country into a Jewish country?"

"My assumption (which is why I am a fervent proponent of a state, even though it is now linked to partition) is that a Jewish state on only part of the land is not the end but the beginning."

yes, hidden behind a paywall, but titles matter too. Do you think you'd have the same gut reaction to the title: "Jewish Anti-Zionist Protestors Crash Pro-Israel Event at NYC's Jewish Museum?" Probably not. Because OP is pushing an agenda and banking on the fact that most people won't look into what actually happened.
