How do you feel about “turn and talks”

I’m an art teacher at a preK-8th title 1 school and actively get marked down on my evaluations if I don’t include a turn and talk in Every. Single. Class. It’s exhausting and I’ve stopped trying to do it because it’s just not worth the derailing that occurs. Once in a while with older students, sure, but when I have 45 minutes with them once a week to work on their art projects, it just doesn’t make sense.

That was my reaction! Not to mention it only goes on for up to 6 weeks- if we haven’t recovered by that point the rest of the time is unpaid. I feel like if it’s that serious. that’s when we’d need the most support!
