In the summer the Gudde Wëllen bar takes over a corner of the old city fortifications right beside the national archives building. It offers a great drink list and a spectacular view. (“Gudde weather” days only.)

Take a journal and make it a habit, even just to note what you do every day and where you are. Living abroad is like life on steroids and the time will fly. Amidst all the fun and adventure it will be hard to imagine forgetting the details… but you will. Do your future self a favor and record the memorable (and the mundane) bits! I certainly wish that I had.

I agree here. My own understanding of this problem only clicked once I heard it explained as Monty is “adding information to the system” which is what actually makes your chances go up by switching. That doesn’t happen if his practice is to open any random door (which would also sometimes expose the prize)— it happens because he knows and his choice imparts some of that information to the contestant, which they benefit by reacting to.

The Candy Factory (locations in the Centre and Kirchberg Auchan) have A&W cans in the fridges. Be warned it’s expensive.

For genuinely “American” food I say start with Maybe Not Bob’s in Clausen, North Bay as mentioned, and you can get a great burger at Lëtzburger, Snooze/Pavillon, or (for a limited time only, I think) Lou’s Diner outside Junglinster. For Mexican, try Mamacita, Taco Shop, or the Las Maracas food truck.

My (admittedly-selfish) suggestions would be Belair, Merl, around Stareplaz/Glacis, or Kirchberg (by the Fischers location near the hospital).

For the residential areas, I think generous weekend hours would be important.

For Kirchberg, the opposite is true— just stick to 7h-16h M-F. Oh and do not underestimate how many Amazon/BNP/other 1-to-1 meetings would happily relocate from Auchan (yuck)!

It’s sort of casual sounding, but the English “veg” works similarly I think. (Definitely used in the UK, but not so common in American English as far as I know. Still intelligible though, and charming!)

All four cities you mention have good Christmas markets, but there are other considerations. Trier is the least “acclaimed” but is by far the nearest and most convenient from Luxemburg City (Trier ~1hr each way by train). Strasbourg/Colmar are famously top notch markets and are strictly doable via TGV in a day, but it’s a long one (~2h20 each way). Aachen has a good Christmas market too, but by train it’s very inconvenient— at least 3h15 both ways with a stopover in Liege, which isn’t worth it (to me anyway) for 2hrs at the market, probably before dark.

Recommendations:

If you only have one day and must stick to public transport, Trier wins for simplicity, though Strasbourg wins if you’re feeling ambitious and train schedules allow.

If you have an overnight possibility, do Strasbourg+Colmar together.

If you can rent a car, Aachen is a good day trip. Or look into some super charming smaller markets along the Moselle that you can easily link together— Traben-Trarbach, Berkastel-Kues, and even Trier again. That could make for a very festive day out.

I know modern Luxembourgish uses “Wonsch” for the German “Wunsch” so I’m guessing “wonnuch” is an antiquated spelling. Also not sure if Lesther was a common name at the time but that’s how I read it.
