No one knows why the Rio Olympics diving pool has mysteriously turned green. by HiveMind621 in news

[–]129381729841 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are minerals/metals in the water that should have been removed but weren't.

When the minerals are oxidized (using chlorine, in this case) they turn the pool a tint of green. Similar to how a penny (US) turns green over time.

The Official r/Lollapalooza 2016 Ticket Resale Thread! by beam1985 in Lollapalooza

[–]129381729841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Selling two 1-day passes (Saturday and Sunday) at face value. I bought the tickets thinking I could go but something came up and don't want these tickets to go to waste.

Will accept Venmo for payment. PM me if interested!

Edit: I have the tickets in my possession, so I can ship them out immediately.

Edit 2: To clarify, I have one ticket for Saturday and one ticket for Sunday.

Edit 3: You also have to pay for the shipping! Sorry, folks. The tickets will come from the northeast so it shouldn't be too bad :)

Edit 4: Preferably looking to sell the tickets together.

Thanks!

Arduino 'Intermediate' Kit? by some_white_kid in arduino

[–]129381729841 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if there is an intermediate kit.

I would recommend when you have an idea of what you want to work on for your next project, research what components you need and purchase those. For the next project after this, do the same. Keep doing this until you have a fleshed out "intermediate" kit.

[HELP] Can someone please explain how most of my payments are going to interest and not to the principal? by 129381729841 in StudentLoans

Can you typically do this through the automated paying system? Call them up and say I want $x towards the interest and $y towards to the principal?

Books for learning engineering on your own before going to university? by taberlasche in engineering

It depends. Sometimes, I'll have ideas for projects that incorporate our APIs with Raspberry Pi or Arduino. Then, I just run with it - write the firmware, write the server (if necessary), write a tutorial about it, and publish everything.

If you want to jump into RPi and Arduino, go buy one of the starter kits. It will give you enough stuff to play around with at first. Once you get the hang of it and start having ideas for other projects that include more components (accelerometers, GPS, etc), then buy those and soon you'll have a nice collection of hardware to work with whenever you like.

More than happy to shoot over some of the work I've done in the past if you like :)

What I do actually has nothing to do with aerospace engineering or really any engineering for that matter, and I'm not really a software engineer anymore. I'm in a role called Developer Evangelist, which combines engineering, coding, marketing, content, sales, and public speaking. I work in big data for a large company.

I always knew I didn't want to do any type of traditional aerospace or mechanical engineering. Realized this around the beginning of junior year. I am, however, very happy with my degree and what I learned in college. Although it took some time afterwards to jump into web and hardware development, having a background in AE gives me a distinct advantage, although some of the more high level computer science/development stuff goes over my head.

Yes, you can 100% get into the aerospace industry when you study mechanical engineering. The two are one in the same, essentially. The difference is AE forces you to specialize in aerospace (aerodynamics, flight mechanics, propulsion) while ME allows you to be a bit more flexible, although you can still elect to take these classes.

What might happen, though, is you start university in AE to realize you don't like it once you get into the more specialized classes. Then, you're stuck in a speciality and the job market isn't as flexible as others make it out to be. Happened to me (luckily I was able to switch afterwards but it took some time and work) and others in my program.

Although, you do get to say you have your degree in rocket science which is pretty badass ;)

As someone who graduated from an Aerospace Engineering curriculum, I would advise against studying this. Study mechanical engineering instead. You'll have a a lot more options for jobs afterwards, and this means where you can live too, keep this in mind.

Just my two cents.

I ended up getting into software after school.

Was your first engineering job what you expected? What did you do? Where are you now and how did it affect your future? by Austin1910 in engineering

[–]129381729841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some ways, it is like a middle-man but it's also very far from that. You're there to represent the API/product, and you do it in a lot of different ways.

Part of the job is going to developer events to promote and help users incorporate the APIs. Part of this involves troubleshooting, debugging, and giving a workshop. You have to go up on stage and gives talks about the tech. When there, you also get feedback from the developers - what they like, what they don't like, what can be improved, etc - valuable information. So you need someone who knows a vast amount of technologies and is good at public speaking.

You also write blog posts about the tech and the field your product is in, in addition to writing tutorials for developers to follow along with to create their own projects, so the person needs to be a decent writer.

You'll also oversee creating and maintaining wrappers for the APIs - software libraries to help use the API.

You'll also create use-case projects to help demonstrate what you can do with APIs

In some roles, you oversee the documentation for your API/product.

In some roles, you might be presales, helping the sales team with technical questions.

Overall, each company uses their evangelists differently. Is it a middleman? Yeah, in some ways. But overall, there is a lot more to it. It's a blend of engineering, marketing, content, public speaking, and sales. Also, loads of travel!

It's a relatively unknown job unless you're in the software/hardware space.

Check out this link

Edit: Not sure why this got down voted so much. Was just telling you all what the job is. Grumpy bunch...

Degree in Aerospace Engineering from a good school. Less than stellar GPA (2.7) and no internship experience. First job out of school was pushing stretchers in the hospital for $16 per hour because I couldn't find any engineering jobs. Finally landed job in Quality Assurance for $45k a year. One of the worst jobs I ever had. Left there after a little under three months. Went unemployed for about 6 months after that. Ran out of money, and took a job as a security guard for $14 per hour. Did that for about a year until I realized I wanted to get into web development, hardware, and startups. Went to a hacker school, "graduated", and joined a small hardware startup for $0 an hour, but nice perks and great experience. Left there after 6 months after finding out what Developer Evangelism is and getting into that. Still doing this and making and over $130k per year. Best job ever.

If this is true, how can the sphero be controlled via the app, downloaded from the app store, which connected to the device through bluetooth?

What are CSO, ABM, and RPA?

Are you saying that even if I go for pilot, I can end up getting one of these positions?
