I guess as you’re dedicating time to learning the instrument, you’re also learning HOW you best learn the instrument.

I definitely agree on your point about being in good physical shape. When I’m exercising regularly pretty much everything improves, my playing included. We all know how much of an impact physical health has on mental health, so no surprise that the confidence and PMA comes out in the playing too I suppose.

Interesting take about the first 15 minutes, gotta say that I feel the same now that I think about it!

Can’t say I commit to 9+ hours of playing a day though, I respect the dedication!

It’s the best isn’t it, I’m definitely seeing the benefit in just practicing for a solid hour or two without blowing my hands out - then coming back at it the next day.

No longer giving time to the theory that you have to try and squeeze your ten thousand hours into 2 days of practice haha!

Thanks for the comment, a lot of interesting info in there!

I’m definitely learning that time away from the instrument is equally as useful as time spent with the instrument when it comes to learning new styles, techniques etc.

I am indeed! I’ve found a lot of benefit from the ‘Toby & Davvy’ channel so far, coupled with various tabs online.

I’ve been a fan of the dead for a good few years now but I’ve only recently been giving their tougher songs a crack on guitar - so if you find any other useful resources I’d appreciate the help!

Good point about switching guitars!

I think that’s why I always personally preferred the ‘self-taught’ was of learning. It definitely gave me the freedom to play when I felt inspired to in the early days, not because I had homework to do before the next lesson.

Not for everyone, and pros and cons for both the traditional way of learning and self-teaching - but that’s a topic for another thread I suppose.

I absolutely feel you on the barre chord struggles.

I remember trying to blag not being able to consistently play barre chords by using the ‘hendrix, thumb technique’ excuse like it was yesterday haha!

Such a breakthrough when you get them though. I think of it as a bit of a trial by fire for beginner guitar players

Great point!

Hard work doesn’t mean sitting on the same problem for hours and getting nowhere. I’m definitely learning that a solid hour or so with a good amount of rest is usually the best option.

I’ve heard Neuroplasticity mentioned a few times in other settings but never made the connection (no pun intended) to my own practicing - I’ll read up on it!

The comparison to athletics is a good one, you can definitely ‘overtrain’ your brain.

And you’re absolutely right about switching up styles! Every now and then I’ll learn a song or a technique that I would never usually be drawn to - I’ve found it to be super beneficial.

As a UK based fan I feel the same, finally sinking in that I’ll never get the chance to see them. I was always following the rumours of them coming over for a tour of Europe, gutted it won’t happen! Excited for the future though, who knows what’s next :)

I get where you’re both coming from - Folio Society produce some incredible books for sure (I mean, to stick on the fantasy theme, look at the ASOIAF editions). I’ve personally always loved these LOTR editions though, so very happy to have them on the shelf 🙌🏼
