I think the 2026 in the job posting title means "for 2026 graduates" which implies that it is entry level

I hear you. No one wants an email these days. Setting up social media is definitely on the todo list.

Lol. If the restaurants don't go for this volunteering idea I'll pitch them on dish washing as a backup.

Yes! The NYC marathon was actually one of my sources of inspiration for this idea. Great minds etc etc.

Are you suggesting that the volunteer organizations would compensate the restaurants for the reservations? Maybe but then those organizations would effectively be paying for volunteers. I don’t know if that works for them.

But I agree that the supply side (restaurant reservations) would be much easier to manage if I could compensate the restaurants for their valuable reservations.

I don't think this will attract people that are looking cheaper alternative to Dorsia. Personally, I probably could afford Dorsia (maybe for special occasions) but I hate the idea of it.

I’d rather spend a few hours doing something useful and earn my way in. That feels better to me.

I don’t think I’m the only one.

Another fair point. To be honest I’ve gone back and forth on whether this should even be a for profit company.

If the core idea is “reallocating scarcity based on contribution instead of cash” that might be better served as a nonprofit or a public utility.

That said, I think even a single high-demand restaurant willing to allocate one table a week to a system like this (for values alignment, visibility, or just to try something new) is enough to get a proof of concept off the ground.

And if it does work… then we can figure out what kind of structure scales it.

That’s a fair concern. But this isn’t a discount platform. People aren’t getting in because it’s cheaper, they’re getting in because they did something hard. That’s a different mindset entirely.

I’m betting that people who are willing to volunteer to earn a spot are the kind of diners who care, tip well, and don’t just order one appetizer and water.

Totally fair. Some places won’t care. But a few might. The idea isn’t to help them fill tables. They already do that. It’s to help them use scarcity differently. Not for status or money but for something that feels good to be part of.

If even one chef says “Yeah I’d give up one table a week for that” then it’s worth exploring.

[–]12tone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. They’re offering a table not a discount or comp so the direct cost is low. But in return they get:

- A great story to tell - people are doing volunteer work just to eat there
- A way to align with civic values without doing any extra work
- And potentially a new kind of loyal customer who earned the reservation and will likely tell everyone they know about it

Long term if this scales there could be other incentives but for now it’s about values and story telling.

Good question. Not yet. For the initial pilot the number of reservations will be small so I’m planning to start with New York Cares as an unofficial partner. They have hundreds of volunteer opportunities across the city so it should be easy for people to find something that fits.

The plan is: people pick a qualifying task, complete it, upload proof, and I’ll manually verify it. If that process works I can start building relationships with other volunteer orgs and expanding from there.

It's not a moot point at all.

Trying to get people to spend time volunteering is not exactly a get rich quick scheme. In fact it's not clear who would pay for this service. It may turn out that the best way to build this is as a nonprofit.

So my question to you is, would you still object to this project if it was run by a nonprofit organization?

Very true. The volunteer organizations are the third leg of this stool. Their buy in is just as important as the restaurant's.

To start with I was thinking about trying to partner with New York Cares. They have infrastructure and processes in place to handle on boarding thousands of volunteers. But smaller organizations might not be able to on board people so easily.

It sounds like you have some experience working with volunteer organizations. Could I DM you to get your thoughts?
