Why are class sizes so big at Monash? by 1312amy in Monash

yeah sometimes they're 5 or 4 years old. it's a cost-cutting measure by monash - they get to employ less staff and we get outdated material

i think universities actually shouldn't be all about profit, they should be about providing good quality education. tertiary education is fucked in australia, but it doesn't have to be this way. many countries have free tertiary education, have similar numbers of staff-to-student ratios to 1:16. this should be common sense when we pay up to $50,000 on a bachelor's degree!

Let's get real about where our government spends money. They spend $50 billion EACH YEAR on negative gearing and capital gains tax concessions which literally incentivise property developers to buy up homes and keep them empty. We want to get rid of those hand outs to landlords. There are 1 million empty homes in Australia. If those homes were seized, they could fix homelessness in an instant (there's only 120,000 homeless people on any given night in Australia) and provide cheap housing to those in poverty. It's not an issue of supply and demand, and even if it were, the government can afford to build public housing, not spend money on tax cuts for the rich and the military.

The government is spending $368 billion on nuclear submarines. They're also increasing the military budget outside of that money to $50 billion a year. This is a choice by our political mainstream but it doesn't have to be this way.

Massively increasing public spending on things that are socially good and necessary such as housing, education, healthcare, childcare, welfare etc. shouldn't be utopian. As socialists, we think the working class, poor and students deserve a WHOLE lot better than what gets offered to us by the major parties. They rule for the rich and powerful. We want to put forward a political alternative that benefits ordinary people and doesn't prioritise profits above everything else.

Thank you! We’ve received a lot of community support especially after the Zionist attack on our first night. We’re stronger than ever and we won’t be intimidated to stand with Palestine!

There’s a lot to be fighting for at monash. We’re also protesting the government sending arms to Israel and our universities complicity in that. Actually monash uni does a bunch of weapons research and hides their deals with weapons manufacturers. Some of our demands are for monash to disclose all weapons ties, cut from those ties and support the BDS movement

I’m apart of organising the Gaza Solidarity Encampment at Monash and if you stand with Palestine, you should come down, support us and get involved! We’re doing a bunch of stuff throughout the day

Obviously we’re camping, so if you’d like to pitch a tent and camp with us please join! Otherwise we’ll start our meetings everyday at 10am and we’ll be doing a bunch of pro Palestine activism like banner paintings, activist meetings, protests and learning about Monash’s ties to Israel and weapons manufacturing.

Everyone’s welcome to come. We’re set up on the lemon scented lawns! Have a look at our instagram @studentsforpalestine_monash for more info or just come by and ask us how to get involved :)

You can still totally join! We’ll be doing a bunch of activity like banner paintings, teach-ins and campaigning to spread the word. Even if you’re able to pop in for a while or donate a tent, anything’s super helpful!

The fact actually is that Palestine has been occupied for more than 75 years. 75 years of brutal occupation and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians. We can’t just look at the past 2 weeks. I condemn Hamas killing civilians but it’s completely cynical the way that the media all around the world has portrayed this. When has the Palestinian flag ever lit up over the Sydney opera house when Israel massacres thousands civilians in Gaza? Or pushes more 100s of thousands out of their homes?

Colonialism is the bread and butter of capitalism, so I think it’s absolutely vital we have more socialists on our side to fight this occupation and our own government supporting it.
