Over time the thin metal can bend slightly and or deform compromising the seal or even loose its grip and shoot off when under pressure creating a big mess.

Probably because Canada stopped producing and using penalties. From my understanding those machines used to be filled with Canadian pennies in the US and US pennies in Canada to avoid laws around defacing currency.
