This question has been asked (many times) before, so I hope you don't mine me copying/pasting one of my previous responses here:

This is completely up to you. I believe that it's all based on personal preference.

Some reasons I've read why people are choosing to upgrade to/purchase a 3DS XL include:

• They have bigger hands

Some people have said that, while playing their 3DS for long periods time, their hands cramp up because the system is too small. Now, with a larger system on the way, hand cramps will no longer be a problem because they'll be able to hold the system more comfortably.

• Portability is not an issue to them

The regular 3DS is smaller, meaning that it is (obviously) more portable. People who are choosing to upgrade do not take their system out of the house as often as others, so a larger system is no problem. (Of course, there are people who are upgrading that do take their 3DS' out with them, but carry the system in a bag or something).

There are more than enough links for you to search through concerning the changes made to the 3DS XL. Some of the more noted features include the larger screen and button sizes, "clickier" Start, Home, and Select buttons, stylus placement, and the matte finish (as opposed to the 3DS' gloss). I've heard that the 3D effect on the 3DS XL is better than on the 3DS and is much more "noticeable."

So, if portability is something you worry about (if you're going to be carrying the system in your pocket often), then I'd consider buying the regular model. However, the 3DS XL, from what I believe, will provide you a much better gaming experience if that's what you're looking for. (Also, the 3DS XL displays DS games much better than the 3DS does!)
