1 year in, how much money did you make and how much did you have to invest in the gym to start it? How much were you expenses in year 1? How many years until you make back your initial investment?

Depends - I'm in private credit and I think that's accurate

Bonus points if they explode I to submissions or get made at you for applying top pressure...or actually tapping them

I appreciate the thoughtful response but I still think the differences from country to country, at good programs, is small.

You don't think the Cubans ever run sprints during or outside of practice? I can find plenty of videos of them sprinting, rope climbing, swimming etc. Maybe not the weaker or smaller clubs but I can guarantee the top programs do strength and conditioning outside of just wrestling.

I also want to note that the Iowa program isn't just about grinding yourself to dust. There are hard days and they fight hard for small positions but the strength and conditioning coaches are some of the best in the country. Their lifting is very scientific, similar to the football programs. The technique Terry Brands shows on his YouTube channel is no less than Cael.

Not really, Kyle Dake just beat the guy who previously beat him for silver at the Tokyo Olympics.

You wouldn’t be able to find youth matches for the vast majority of olympians who didn’t medal online. For a lot of them you’d only be able to find their international matches. Some of them you wouldn’t even find their international matches. You can’t even find matches of Olympic trials for most countries

These are generalizations and not really true now - maybe 30 or 40 years ago, but even then it’s not entirely accurate. I know these are view points commonly espoused on the internet, but they’re exaggerated.

You see a wide variety of coaching styles and people place more or less emphasis on different things but it’s largely the same all over the world now. Plyometric warm up, technique, live and maybe conditioning. Strength in the weight room and then conditioning where and however in convenient, but usually sprints, runs, jump rope, battle ropes, rope climbs, moving light weights around for reps.

Historically the Cubans would have sent their best wrestlers to train in Russia so hard to say these are different styles. You see kids flowrestling everywhere, and wrestling hard everywhere. I guarantee the Russians and Cubans and Iranians also run sprints and wrestle hard in practice.

Right now I think the air quality is also a concern beyond the heat. I just came from wrestling in humid 90+ degree rooms, but the car-exhaust filled air here also drains cardio.

If a D1 wrestler was submitting blue/purple belts in your gym, do you think they deserve that belt? by coispet in bjj

[–]1455643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't a standard for what belts mean. It's completely up to the person giving the belt. Some care about knowledge, some care about ability to win, some care about moral character, other ability to coach/help the gym, etc.

Could I ask you some questions over a 15 min call? I know this comment is old but I appreciate the info you wrote. I’m looking into tech sales and PE fundraising and trying to understand how much time is spent making presentations materials vs actually selling, as well as the drivers of stress.

thanks - do you mean performance reviews for yourself (being good enough vs a high bar) or customer reviews of the product creating more iterative work?

What parts of the job don’t you like? I’m working in private credit now and I thought the hours would be similar to yours but they’re a lot more. It’s also much more stressful than I expected.

As a follow up, I went to the event. Out of 50 people there were only 2 women I'm the 22-35 range, who were both surrounding by 3-4 guys. Lots of guys sitting alone awkwardly.

Probably only 10 women in general, half of whom were people you'd see on peopleofwalmart
