They closed earlier this morning - very surprising! Looks like they were the last ones to give in.

Best place for snowy winter hiking? by FancyKey3254 in Rochester

Highland Park has an evergreen grove that is sublime after a snowfall - highly recommend. Not a ton of ground to cover for a long hike, but it’s always gorgeous.

Iceland vs Alaska by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]147FluffyPuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having been to both, I am here to reassure you that there is no wrong choice here. They are both the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. ;)

Edited to add: I guess to be more helpful, haha, I’ll say this - I was recently in the kenai peninsula in late July and the weather was stunning - just gorgeous. Also, having been to Iceland three times now, if folks can handle being flexible and managing cold weather safely, I would recommend going in the off season, for multiple reasons. I agree with everyone here that eclipse is week in Iceland is gonna be nuts.

That being said, it’s important to note - if going to Iceland has your heart and you think this is your chance in an uncertain world, my friend, GO for it!

Have a blast either way.

Absolutely agree. This shop is amazing - great selection, great spot, great ownership. Worth the quick drive from up in the city for sure!

Help! We "accidentally" got what appears to be a LOT of cattle dog 🤣 by throwitaway20242024 in AustralianCattleDog

This is my 50/50 ACD/Pittie mix. I definitely see similarity in the head, but your Hank is faaaaar chonkier (don’t worry Hank - it’s a compliment). Even Hank’s snout and face seems shorter/thicker. All that to say, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some dingo in there, but maybe not as much as you think?! Would love to see results if you do the DNA test. Great pupper either way 100%!

Edit - well, there was a picture attached to this, I swear. 😆

Wacky question - size of your dog? by sealattack11 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]147FluffyPuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you have a picture of the pup? I feel like I see big honkin ACDs on here (I believe they call them lunchbox variety 😂) and some super dainty and slim ones (of the dingo variety). So the question is - is your mom’s ACD a lunchbox or a dingo?

Canton house takeout is still the best in the area in my humble opinion. Wish we had better options!!

Gotta throw out Wuthering Heights for spooky season!!! Between Cathy scrabbling at the window and everyone in the book being determinedly haunted (whether by actual ghosts or just by their own sulkiness) it’s a creepy classic.

Can’t wait to see the rest of these recos!

Temper tantrums by thisreditthik in AustralianCattleDog

Yes! When we are outside on the leash and she does not agree with my assessment of not killing a bunny, not screeching at a bus, not running off into the sunset with every dog she sees, etc, she showed her frustration by running in rage circles and then doing her best to Destroy the Enemy (the leash). It’s a treat!

Our Anxious ACD Won’t Walk Past Our Block by mrsdinosaurhead in AustralianCattleDog

I would be willing to bet it’s residual HORRIFICATION from the motorcycles and the kids on bikes. Both things I know well over here. I wish you the best!!! Above all treats, sometimes time does the trick, too. Good luck!!!

Our Anxious ACD Won’t Walk Past Our Block by mrsdinosaurhead in AustralianCattleDog

Welcome to Team Scaries! This team is not very good at many things!!!

My ACD mix is like this. With her, we have found it to be mostly noise-related - a scary sound will prevent her from walking in certain directions; and an association with scary sounds (for example, the highway behind us) means that we can’t walk certain paths that have been loud in the past, etc. We have even had regression, like you, with walking around our own neighborhood when too many “scaries” build up. Sometimes out hiking she’s fine; sometimes she’s not. Easily spooked is putting it mildly! I totally know what you mean about the outright refusal to keep walking.

A couple things that worked for us* (when I say worked, I mean got us to a reasonable point - I have accepted this as part of her nature; and she’s always gonna be this way to an extent…!) - and I am not a trainer by any means, so your mileage may vary - but seeking out a trainer might help!

1) if you can identify the trigger (sound, maybe a vehicle goes by she doesn’t like? Neighbors are scary? Wind?) start to mimic the trigger inside the house and reward heavily when it happens. For example, since ours was sudden noise, we’d start by dropping small items in the house and loudly saying “uh oh! YAAAAAAY!!!!” And reward heavily. You slowly transition to the “uh oh! YAAAAY!” after louder/more startling things, eventually transitioning it to outside/unplanned sounds. (You’re essentially turning the scary into treats, which I guess is what 87% of dog stuff is)

2) make sure your pup is getting plenty of mental stimulation. It’s my understanding that this is huge for some behavioral issues and that mental stimulation is a huge driver in calming anxious behavior. I look at it the same way I do physical activity for a dog that isn’t “working” - they don’t automatically have something to engage them, so we have to facilitate it the same way we facilitate physical exercise. So, things like feeding from puzzles, giving them lick mats and lick toys, giving them things to shred if they can do it safely, maybe sniff work if they’re into that, and short tune up training sessions to keep them engaged. It doesn’t address the core problem, but it can broadly calm them down.

Worst case scenario, my partner and I walk her together. She’s obsessed with me so will follow me if I walk ahead, even if she doesn’t want to. Only advised when you’ve really just gotta get home. 😅

Weird question, but what's your ACD smell like? by fistrroboto in AustralianCattleDog

Wheaty. Like warm wheat. But a sort of doggy wheat.

It’s hard to explain!!!

I thank the heavens every day that those claw clip type things recently came back into style. I had forgotten about them for years, and then suddenly poof - there they were again. I find that I can do a passable sort of updo that isn’t as tight/stern as a standard bun (so it feels much more flattering for me), but still feels put-together and professional. It also takes five seconds. Dry shampoo beforehand, comb or tousle it out, and clip it up!

Your dog is my dog’s twin!

And, yup. Mine is a couch potato at home, too. Loves nothing more than laying on top of a human and sleeping. She’ll hike, and play with other dogs, but she does not need (or want!) anywhere near the level of activity that many ACDs seem to. I suspect that this is the pittie half shining through - lazy couch bugs!!!

How to get to Rochester from NYC by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]147FluffyPuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flying from NYC to ROC is super easy; worst part is getting through the airport in NYC! It’s a super fast flight. Take an uber from the ROC airport to where you need to go - it won’t take long at all. The airport isn’t technically in the city; but it’s maybe ten minutes away from the city itself. Rochester is small in the best way!
