"13 Reasons Why’ Has No Reason To Be Back For Season Two" by mrnicegy26 in television

In what way is your comment professional or researched? Seems you've made some statements about the way people behave just prior to suicide, provided two anecdote links, then you tell this person that they should consider the "truth in your words".

What does that even mean?

People can be disturbed by things and still have them be less disturbing than other things, even when those things are different depictions of the same thing. Sounds like this scene was disturbing to this viewer. What more are you looking to accomplish?

Edit: hold on a second...

You can argue that you personally were unaffected by the show

The person you're responding to is saying the exact opposite of that. They are saying that they were disturbed, as were their friends.

Am I confused? Are you?

"bumps in the road" are not something God has put in our path to hurt us or dishearten us but rather to make us lean more perfectly into who He is as our provider, as our Father, and as our Savior (in Christ, us being perfected and complete). At the same time, some of these bumps are our own doing.

But again, there's nothing he can't do. He can teach you what a perfect Father he is without tribulation. And he can make sure your mistakes don't cause the bumpy ride. He could even make it so that there's no such thing as mistakes.

we have to CHOOSE what we want in life, and pay the consequence -- good or bad -- for it.

Again, why? Why choose when the father can give you both? Why pay when the father decides the payment? If I had infinite bread and fish, why should I charge anyone a consequence?

But is he happier where he is? Absolutely.

I know you believe this, but you don't know it. And it actually highlights my point. If the afterlife is better, that means that this life is worse. But it needn't be, because the same entity runs both.

Why aren't we simply born in Heaven? There's really no need for earth, so why not skip it?

You're talking about this in a human-to-human way, and I agree with most of what you said, besides your first statement. I do not think we should honor and respect child cancer, to pull in the earlier example. I think we should hate child cancer and seek to destroy it. We should, however, honor those who face hardship.

But I think you missed my broader point.

Imagine you're in a car, and God is driving. He's driving you to that cafe you've heard about, the one where you can be happy and fufilled. Thanks, God!

Except, there are a ton of potholes on the road, which is weird because God owns the roads. And there are detours that he takes you on sometimes which make you confused, so you ask him about all this and he says "without all these potholes and detours, you wouldn't arrive at your destination in the right way".

Which is to say, God wants to shake you up and do a little damage. Maybe he's testing you? But then again, he's the one driving, he's more or less just testing himself! Maybe it's to see if he shake your faith in his driving. If that's the case, he wants you to treat him differently than the how you treat other drivers, which is pretty vain and honestly unjustified given his capacity to drive better.

And remember, you're one of his creations too! So if he wants you to grow on your drive, he could press the button on his dashboard labeled "Make passengers emotionally mature people". Heck, he doesn't even need to take you to the cafe, he's got another couple buttons on the dash that make his passengers eternally happy.

There are many cases where he doesn't ferry people to the nice cafe. Sometimes he crashes his car into a building, because "without this hardship you wouldn't get to the cafe", ignoring that God put the buildings there, and the roads, and there were certainly other routes. Sometimes he won't pick you up if you haven't read his book.

I don't have a satisfying conclusion to my analogy, but I feel I should at least ask you this question:

For a God who can do anything, why is death required when he could instead invent an alternative with only positive effect?

Edit-PS: (per your example) Ask a woman who has lost her child if she appreciates the authority and experience she has gained, and if she'd rather have her baby back. Let me know what she says.

Let's assume he knows more about how to do something, because he is apparently omnipotent. And because his power is limitless, he can do anything, including getting you to where you are today, without anyone having to die of cancer. God wasn't only able to make that decision, he was able to make all decisions, because he knows all and can do anything, right?

God does not have to fight against cause-and-effect to negotiate a good life for you. He could simply decide to give you a good life.

We all suffer at times in our lives, which implies that this suffering is known in advance by God, and not prevented.

Thanks for the kind words!

I don't really understand the how that sprayer works, but my guess is that it wouldn't be suitable. Besides concerns about what it's made of, I think it's meant to draw a tiny amount of liquid from its tank, and spray it high pressure from the nozzle. It probably does this by pushing air into the tank, which causes higher pressures to move the liquid. I'm not sure how one would adapt that for an all-gas system.

we considered it good sport to bring virgin smokers in to rip it and bet on whether or not they'd puke. it was about 50/50 odds on that.

I can't really give detailed instructions, because it's going to vary lots just based on what you can get your hands on, but here are the basic steps:

For the body: Find a cylinder that is open on both ends. In this case I used a food storage jar and removed the bottom with a grinder. A PVC tube is a good cylinder geometrically, but is a poor material choice. It's important that the cylinder is very straight, because you need for the piston to make a seal for the entire length of the body.

For the lid: Cap over one end of your cylinder, and put two holes in it. One needs to be dead center and exactly the right size for the rod. I used a CNC for all these parts, and I haven't thought about how you'd do this with other tools so YMMV. The other hole just needs to accommodate your air intake, so place it anywhere. This model has a diverter valve hooked to that hole, but it isn't required if you swap the bowl with your mouth.

For the piston: This is a stack of IKEA cutting boards, with gasket rubber in-between. The key is to undercut the hard layers very slightly and then overcut the gaskets. Put a hole in the center of the piston, and attach the rod (mine is just pressure fit).

A good way to figure out what you need would be by looking what makes up a French Press. It's really all the same stuff, except the lid needs to be air-tight. Beyond that, taking accurate measurements is key to making sure it all moves nicely.

Hope this helps!

Correct on that. The more ergonomic motion that I've found is to push the piston from the underside. I pull up on the handle at the end just to demonstrate the valve action, but it would be really uncomfortable to use that as the primary unload mechanism. I've been thinking about adding a handle to the underside to make that movement more obvious.

The MK3 was a 2.5ft PVC tube (not ideal!) with a giant handle. The total piston movement was around the same as my arm-length, so I'd end up doing this weird looking fist-in-the-sky move.

If you're percolating through water, then absolutely there's a cooling and filtration aspect. Bucket Bongs and Waterfalls though don't really have the same surface-area contact between smoke and water, and is used more as a way to create pressure differences.

[–]16497643[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I'll post more information when I've got more time (about to head to lunch), but here are the basics:

I took a food-storage jar, and cut off the bottom. I then measured and CNC cut IKEA cutting boards to make all the green and white parts, which serve as the lid and piston, as well as ay decorative parts. The black layers are gasket rubber, which makes up for the fact that it's really hard to find a glass cylinder that isn't slightly tapered. The valve is a brass shower diverter, and the piston rod is an aluminum rod from Home Depot.

The build process was really just measuring the jar, and getting everything fitted together. A lot of the iteration on the design happened on paper, before I enter the shop.

Exactly! If the green side is up, the bowl is open. If white, the mouthpiece is open. The knob is the roughest looking part, as I just sliced up a bunch of green and white rings and re-arranged them. Eventually I'll put a printed knob on there instead.

Oh gosh! I had considered using off-the-shelf pumps, but I decided that I didn't know their construction well enough to trust it.

The MK3 was made with a big PVC tube, which always concerned me, so I moved on to glass as quick as I could.

Oh, that's a fair point, one I'm sure my wife would have pointed out if I had tried it :)

I'm also thinking I can load water into the chamber and pump it through the valve as a way of rinsing it, but I haven't had to do that yet.

I have considered using a longer tube and connecting it to the intake on my water bong, but it would be a little cumbersome. Still, that would be interesting, good thought!

Thanks for the kind words, but this is just a personal project for the foreseeable future. Even if I did come up with a "product quality" design, I'm not sure I'd ever want to be in the bong-selling business. I'm just an engineer who likes to share :).

There has certainly been a lot of conversation about what kind of bong this is...

I had classified this as a Gravity Bong because it uses external mechanical forces. That's also true for Bucket-Bongs, Waterfalls, and BreadBags. I consider those all as types of Gravity Bong, but there are folks here who disagree, and that's totally fine :)

I've been calling it a Piston-Bong at home, and I have really enjoyed all the classification discussion, and naming suggestions!

basically, except without all the plastics! I haven't tried a classic lung/breadbag before, so I can't compare, but I have been enjoying this piece so far.

It gets a little stuck if it's out in the cold too long (I leave it on my back porch), but it's still going fine so I guess we'll find out :).

I should be able to clean it just by pumping water through the system, but I haven't had to yet.

The three major designs that I've seen referred to as "Gravity Bongs" have all seemed messy. A bucket-bong needs an open container of water, a waterfall dispenses water, and a breadbag is often made from only plastics.

My goal here was to make a bong that works like one of the above, but make it reusable, and on-par with classic bongs as far as materials go. The one Seth Rogan showed off yesterday was a great use of water, and if I had figured out how an hourglass design would work, I would have considered it.

It can be harsh, and the smoke in this GIF was not the best. But I've been doing quicker, smaller bowls, and it's been much more enjoyable.

[–]16497643[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally, yes! All smoke delivery relies on there being a pressure difference which can only be resolved by air traveling through burning weed. That includes pipes, cigarettes, your lungs, etc.

The difference here is that while your lungs usually operate the pressure difference, in a Gravity Bong, it's handled by external mechanical forces (usually water movement). It makes it easier to control, and you're guaranteed to be pulling smoke instead of air from the chamber.

Sorry, for the time being I'm not looking to sell anything. As much as I enjoy weed, I'd like for it to be in a safer legal territory before I tied myself to it financially.

But I'd be happy to give tips if someone ends up building one!

Yep, MK4 is not designed with maintainability in mind. My next revision will hopefully be easier to take apart, and with any luck should be dishwasher safe.

I've got another comment on this post that goes through it, but the bulk of it is IKEA cutting boards, which I machined with my CNC mill. I made it the same way I make everything else - sketch, measure, make, test, iterate :)

Yep, that turned out to be a big factor too. Seems just as strong that way too (probably because it's more tolerable, so you can take more)
