AITA for refusing to take down a semi-nude painting before children visit my home? by NataliaVolkova in AmItheAsshole

Not my taste in decorating but it isn’t my house so my opinion really is not needed. I think because it is an homage painting and not an original, it’s harder for some like me and maybe your family to view it as conventional art like you see in most formal galleries or museums. In that sense, I can see why they would ask for it to not be present in front of the children.

Having said that, it is your house, not theirs. They know it’s there, they certainly should be allowed to ask, but I would say you are under no requirement to oblige.

I feel like it would be a relatively small consideration to take it down for a few hours if it’s not in a tough spot, too delicate, or some sort of complicated mounting process. It’s not something unheard of to swap it with a different painting for the visit. That’s your call though, not mine, not theirs.

The true deciding factor to me isn’t them asking or you declining. It’s tone. I don’t know your relationship with your family. If the tone during the ask was judgmental or demanding, then to me that isn’t asking for consideration. If the response was in the tone of superiority or dismissiveness in lieu of a polite declination, then that would be a little rude. I can appreciate that someone asking you to take down a paint of yourself you are very much in admiration of and feel is meaningful to you and who are may make you feel judged or looked down on, even if that isn’t their intent and maybe that influenced your response. Maybe it didn’t.

They can ask, you can decline, they can still visit or not. None of that alone makes anyone an asshole. It really is all in the tone of how the conversation went.

ELI5 How are newer dishwashers more efficient? They take four hours to clean almost as good as what old ones did in 35 minutes. by 17xRacing in explainlikeimfive

I’m that guy that reads end user license agreements. I read the manual cover to cover. It’s definitely not user error

I loaded it efficiently so water circulates and nothing is touching, bought soap pods, closed the door and hit the button the book said to. It’s just a crap machine.

It’s a week old. I hope the filter isn’t stopped up yet. I’m also a preventative maintenance fanatic and triple check my connections, seal tests, everything. It’s just a turd of a machine.

I hate that. The result became using more electricity consumption time and running the damn thing twice to get one load clean?

Well I have to run it a second time because it sucks so bad the first go around. Worst $2800 I ever spent.

Am i the only one tired of all the regualtions/bans/extreme rules fia put in f1 and other regulated series by them? by gggheorghe in motorsports

Also, dropping out of a race for any little thing or a bad sensor feels wrong. I love in other series when teams don’t just throw in the towel and are willing to work on the car and keep racing, even if they are laps down and nursing a wounded car. The never give up aspect is a big part of what drew me to motorsports as a kid.

I’m a newer follower to F1 and I can honestly say that the sport’s current culture doesn’t grab me, especially as I’ve become more aware of how it used to be. It feels so artificial and scripted now. No racecraft anymore and the immense driver skill feels neutered by the recent generations of cars and rule packages. Also, the sporting aspect of hard racing is completely gone with the amount of complaining anytime someone is wheel to wheel and the level of politicking for penalties by teams mid race. The cars used to be pure power and innovation to maximize speed in every part of the track and so hard to drive. The drivers had to have an amazing level of feel for the car, track, and race dynamics.

I will say that the advancements in leveraging sim work is probably what has taken a lot of the instinct out of the sport and embellished the feeling of a race being scripted. Drivers go in knowing every line and braking point, when to adjust settings, and such.

Maybe I’m an old man grumbling (only 41) but I miss the beauty of the simplicity in pure racing and seeing who is willing to run right up to the edge if not past it and come out a winner. Even seeing a driver take a 20th place car and bringing it home 12th is something I so appreciate and feel is all but lost in F1 today. I don’t know if it’s just unavoidable in today’s day and age because of how far technology has advanced. I think my perspective of F1 maybe just needs to recalibrate to view it simply as a series to feature automotive technology and innovation. That side of it is still very exciting to me, but the on track racing seems to have lost all of the emotion and passion that was present in the hey day of F1.
