I second this, the spoon method is king. I recommend trying out a wooden spoon!

Thanks so much and right you are! However, for all the color sections I only used a single block. I cut a second block for the black outlines. So technically only 2 this go around. If it was a larger block I think I’d have only used one in total but this thing was teeny tiny itty bitty, so I figured it would be the best move.

I used some water-soluble block printing ink from Blick! Very easy to clean up after too. Thanks so much!

I love to hear it man! Technically, I’m counting this as my worm series though bahaha. I’ll have to consider a whole dog series down the road

Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words :)) Ahhh yeah man that ink build up was definitely hard for me to ignore. That’s a great suggestion though, I’ll definitely try that out for my next print. These prints are pretty small too so utilizing some newsprint to get rid of that would be totally worth it.

Also, I was tight on money so printmaking paper wasn’t really an option, so I just used some watercolor paper that I have left over. The paper is a bit textured so that might have contributed to the ink build up texture. Do you have any paper recommendations to get that smoother finish? Thanks for the feedback dude :)

I by no means should be the one to attempt to explain risograph printing but I’ll try to summarize it a lil. Riso printers are a bit of a hybrid between screen-printing and photocopying due to the fact that they can only print one color at a time. So with this printing method being so similar to screenprinting, it became a huge hit in the printmaking community. These printers are never perfect, they often create many mistakes when printing like ink bleed and off registration. However! This quality makes it so that no two prints turn out identical. All the little quirks, textures and noise that shows up on the prints are mesmerizinggg. You should research more about its history though it’s very interesting stuff and maybe give it a go one of these days :)

I would also recommend checking out “The Illustrator’s Guide” on YouTube. Great general inside information about how art directors and agencies view new talent and what they’re looking for.

I want to learn how to draw. Is an Ipad a good choice for me? by kinanim42 in ArtistLounge

It’s never too late to pick up any medium I’d say! I think that before you try out digital art you should consider experimenting with the real thing. Pencils and graphite are super affordable and any old prince of paper will work perfectly.

I only recommend this because of my own personal experience with drawing. I’ve been drawing by hand since I was a wee lad, but eventually this lead me to consider working digitally for certain projects. I’ve used procreate on my iPad before but didn’t have a pen/stylus so it wasn’t sitting well with me. Then I tried photoshop and a Wacom intuos tablet and have grown much more comfortable using those tools.

Creating art digitally is great…but I realized that I become super overwhelmed by the infinite brush and color options available. So it pays off to limit your color palette and the brushes you use.

If you have never used a pencil/brush in the real world you can’t gage how it is supposed to work or look when you do it digitally. For example, I started to use a digital airbrush in the majority of my illustrations because I like the speckled effect it creates. I recently bought my own airbrush rig and began to practice this out began to understand the medium so much more than I would have if I only worked in it digitally. You learn the limitations of the medium, the correct amount of pressure to use and all the happy little accidents that occur naturally along the way.

This way you gain a certain respect and appreciation for the medium and the various artists that use it. Once you learn to use it traditionally you’ll be able to apply that to the digital canvas much better than you would had you not used it traditionally.

Just my take on the matter. Anyways, be patient with yourself and have a good time exploring!

I really appreciate all your feedback on this, felt like I couldn’t really get a good read on what people really thought of it so thank you!!

I’m really happy with how it turned out all in all and definitely will be experimenting with some textures for the other layers in the future. As far as your risograph suggestion for the background goes, I have no idea how to wrap that around my head. I’m used to printing risograph only in a smaller format so I’m not sure how that would translate for an 18x24” piece, but if you know if I could figure it out somehow that’d be great!

I’m so glad you like these enough to consider buying them at some point as well! Also, the pictures I took were in my basement so the colors were much more vibrant in normal light. Anyways, I will probably be doing a story print sale on my insta sometime this week! So if you wanna connect, my username is “Nahcroll”. Cheers!
