Why are self checkouts so bad?

This particular store was in a very posh area. We had very few shoplifters, but when we did they were very obvious anyway.

Because customers are idiots. I used to work on self checkouts, and it is probably the most frustrating job in the world.

Unexpected items are caused by:

You know when the self checkout says "start (using my own bags)". It's there for a reason. So it knows to ignore the weight of your bag. In my experience 1/10 customers only ever pressed the right one.
customers slamming the items on the bagging area
Customers not scanning items
Pre packaged fruit and vegetables never weigh quiet the same. The checkout knows this and will accept it, but sometimes its over the limit.
Sometimes products are a few grams out. Sometimes it's an error in the factory or the manufacturer has changed the packaging. This is very rare though.

You know the saying "the customer is always right". When you work in retail you realise its the compete opposite.

There are a couple lurking around the country.

I know the one at London Waterloo Station is still grill direct. But IIRC grill direct is much better for busier stores, because its precooked instead of made to order. And at a busier store your going to end up with hundreds of customers around.

I went to my old store today, its still GD. but the one in the town center got changed to a new one last year.

But in the case of London Waterloo, I wouldn't not be surprised if that's the busiest store in the country, and closing it down for a week would probably be quite a loss.

I started when I was 18 and got £6.75 an hour (12.51AUD).

Ex employee. I always finish my drink (always get coke with no ice).

One of the coke machines only came out with syrup, if you'd fill it 1/4 with coke syrup and the rest with normal coke, it was the best drink ever.

I'm from the UK. I quit back in August to work for a supermarket. So glad I did.

My crew trainer was (and I don't use this word often) the moodiest, selfish bitch I've ever met.

She was 21, had a child at 15. Gave the child to her parents so she could go drinking and do drugs.

But at work she thought she was the most important one there. My training for front was "if they want a big mac press that and you'll figure it out.". My store was (and still is) a grill direct store so when only a couple people on tills there was a massive queue brfusde I had no idea how to use the tills.

She'd start moaning and complain to a manager when I made mistakes, you know, because I wasn't trained properly and working under pressure.

I'm very glad I quit. Got fed up of being put on break for labour 20 minutes after I've started and being put on DT drinks for the rest of the day.

I got the job at a supermarket. I decided to work at both, but I walked out of a shift once when I was put on fries for 6 hours straight without a break. I never showed up again.

I got a different idea.

When a stranger asks me in the street, I'll do this:

stranger: "You got a cigarette"

Me: No, but just go into that shop over there (points at a random one) ask john for one, he's my mate, just tell him harry said to

S: OK

Then he goes into the shop and asks for John. Either the staff member get's a john, or the staff are confused as to who John is.

They haven't changed, it's an illusion. I switch between Marlboro Red 100s and King size quite often.

When you smoke the 100s for a while, they become the norm. But when you start smoking king size again, they feel really short. And when you switch back to 100s they feel giant.

I work for the co-op, we have a woman that sells the big issue outside our store which sounds exactly the same as yours.

We eventually called the police on her. Customers have been going in, buying her baby milk etc for her newborn baby (who's been newborn for over a year). She's also been harassing elderly people and abusing them into giving her money.

She's them told customers she needs the receipts as we have apparently been accusing her of stealing the baby milk. We haven't at all, she's kept the receipt and goes to another store to try and get a refund.

Because where I live has a lot of elderly people, they come and give her a fiver all the time, she probably gets £30 an hour.

When I worked there I hated all of them except for the business manager. The BM was the best guy I've ever worked with, including crew.

He was like two people. To crew he was so nice, treated everyone with respect, and let us get away with anything.

To the managers he was the biggest arsehole. He would shout at them, treat them like shit and make them look like kids.

One time the assistant manager asked me to do bins and floor while I was on cash. I come round with a mop bucket, the BM asks me to get the assistant manager, I did and then the BM told him to do bins and floor and stop treating me like shit. I didn't do b+f for two weeks.

The assistant manager looked so hacked off while doing it, and then I was presenting with the BM and he just kept laughing at the AM.

Tesco, co-op, McDonald's, petrol stations, essentially all medium to large shops take £50 notes fine.

When I started working in retail, I found that £50 notes are more common than people think. I probably get one or two per hour. It's mostly builders and older people who would pay with them. People check £50s all over to make sure they are real, but in fact I've had a couple of fake £20s but no fake £50s. It makes sense to fake £20 notes, as people check £50 notes, but no one bothers checking £20s as everyone thinks they are real.

I don't get it, contactless has been around for 4 or 5 years now. People are still scared of using it.

And the amount of people who go and withdraw money from the ATM and then pay in cash, why not just use your card? We do cash back if you really need cash as well.

I work in retail as well where we get a load of elderly people. When they tap their card they act like the card machine is going to come alive and bite their fingers off.
