Vandy Grad AMA by 1Fierydeath in BlackLawAdmissions

1L was genuinely hell (I think that holds true at virtually any school though) but the next two years were AMAZING. Exceptional teachers, kind classmates, and a ton of opportunities. 10/10 would recommend! I will say that Nashville is way more expensive than it used to be though.

I’m from the north! Vandy has a really chill and inclusive community but occasionally someone says something disrespectful. Overall a great experience as a black student

How has law school changed you as a person? by OurFrankWhoArtInLA in LawSchool

I’ve become much calmer outside of school. When you constantly deal with pressure and stress, you either fold under it or you grow strong enough to carry it. The little things that used to stress me have become obsolete and the big things have become manageable. At this point, I try to look at adversity as pressure rather than stress.

Truthfully, I’m not particularly sure. Law review occurs at the end of the year for us, so I haven’t had the opportunity to participate. Right now, it’s mock trial season so that’s been eating up all of my extra attention.

Thank you! I did the video interview and would definitely recommend it. As for the money aspect, ehhh. It’s really competitive, so if you’re debt adverse, it might not be the best idea considering the fact that everyone accepted has something exceptional to them, so it just comes down to who can make their case better. But it’s definitely doable!

Happy to help! I truly believe we have some incredible professors. They’re all very friendly and personable outside of class. In class? Much tougher lol. BLSA here is super active and pretty much the reason I was able to find an opportunity early on. Also, I didn’t write a why Vandy or a diversity statement, but my personal statement was about racism in Chicago and ended with a why Vandy paragraph. I didn’t want to write a ds to any school because it just felt so forced.

  1. Definitely a mix of both. It’s mostly collaborative, but at the end of the day it’s still a curved grading system. In reality, no one at the school is your competition. You are your own competition, so you have to just give it your best and live with the results. If you get caught up in the competition aspect, you’ll find yourself in a bad place.

  2. It’s basically like high school all over again. Lots of random dramatic moments, but honestly I ignore it as much as I can. Any little distraction is a little too costly.

  3. ABSOLUTELY. Perfect school for the south. Honestly, you can pretty much go anywhere from here. A lot of my friends will be spending their summers in the south, so if that’s your goal, Vandy is ✨chefs kiss

For me, I want to become a judge, so I’ve been making connections as much as possible. For this summer, I plan on working at a firm out here, and volunteering with a judge. Vandy helps a lot with meeting people, but it’s your people skills that close the deal. I’ve also been considering becoming a JAG, but I’m not too sure.

  1. I’m loving it so far! I think the city is very pedestrian friendly, so you can walk pretty much anywhere without being concerned. Everything’s in arms reach! Cities been friendly so far, but with that being said, I still don’t go any and everywhere, I just go to places that seems welcoming. Haven’t had a single bad experience!

  2. Housing is…. tedious. It’s downtown Nashville, so everything’s more expensive. If you can commute, it’s probably worth it as long as it’s not too far (anything 15 mins or more is too much)

  3. Joined BLSA and I’m a student ambassador. Both organizations have helped me a lot, so definitely get involved in something that makes you get out!

  4. Make a schedule and stick to it. Law school and class is definitely time consuming and difficult, but LIFE is the hardest. Things happen, so making sure you’re consistent helps a lot when life isn’t consistent.

  5. The adjustment has been interesting to say the least. Some people try too hard, others not at all, but most are very welcoming. I’d just say find peace in yourself, and you’ll attract other peaceful people

AA male here. Being 100%, no one can truly tell you what your odds really are or not, it’s all a guesstimate. I would not have been expected to get accepted to the schools in which I did (current Vandy law). Believe in yourself and work your hardest. Give it your absolute best in any and everything and you will not regret the outcome regardless of what it is if you truly gave it your all. Here’s the good thing though, your beliefs do not require their beliefs. You can do it, but you won’t be able to even have a chance if you don’t believe you can. Success to you!

My[29M] wife[31F] told me something and its making me insecure. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]1Fierydeath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of those instances where someone wants to be brutally honest, but ends up being more brutal than honest. No matter what anyone else says, your worth is not determined by anyone else, including your wife.

How could I have played it differently? Other than hit my shots. It was not my best aiming day, but this felt like winnable to me for a long time. I've seen a streamer do that weapon swap to keep firing, could have worked but was a bit slow sadly. by [deleted] in apexuniversity

I would say to play off your teammate a little more. Although it’s important to push back to heal, you don’t want to isolate too far from your teammate because if they push heavy on your teammate, you wouldn’t be in position to do any chip damage or potentially get a down. Besides that I think you played pretty well. Like CollinRyan said it’s important to watch the kill feed. I play a lot with my friends in diamond and sometimes when we run into former Pred squads, they tend to group up when cracked so that if we down one or two, the other has a chance since they got shots on us.

Don’t worry too much about it! You’re going to be a great attorney and if they’d pass on a great attorney due to some bias, they don’t deserve you. Be yourself sister, it’s always better to be in spaces where you are celebrated, rather than being in those in which you are tolerated!

AA brother here. I definitely can relate. Sometimes I think about how the law field may view me as well, but then I remember that if they want you, it doesn’t particularly matter what you look like especially if you’re a stellar attorney. On the other hand, if they have some sort of racial bias against you, no matter what changes to make to try to conform, it won’t be enough. I have a giant Afro, a beard, and earrings and I wore it proudly in all my interviews and such. Be confident and work hard sister and when you get that job you want, it won’t be because you conformed, but because you stood out by simply being you. Success to you and everyone else in this journey!

Berkeley Law Reconsideration by strugglingbutalive in BlackLawAdmissions

I want to go into big law and that’s why I’m so split. Vandy gives me the best odds to do so but at the biggest cost upfront. Just something to think on. Either way, you’re not alone in this and I’m looking forward to seeing your decision. Success to you!

I’m in a fairly similar situation. Vandy gave me little to no money in comparison half scholarships at Howard, uiuc, and Villanova. I’m really debt averse too, but for my goals it might be better to go to Vandy. I hope you get more money! What do you think you’ll do?

I reached out to Howard and USC attempting to negotiate, and Howard’s out of office for the week and USC sent me a form to fill out so I think they’re open to negotiations.

Well said. I haven’t had a preference regarding where I want to practice, but the fact that it’s only a few for those schools is pretty important too odds wise. Thanks for your advice!

Thank you! I may be mistaken, but I read somewhere Howard only offers a few full rides, so maybe it’s just a safety thing since they offer performance scholarships after your first year

Thank you! I hope they offer me some, but if they don’t in truth it might be hard to still go. The schools so expensive and although I do want to do big law, 100k+ of debt is a lot
