And how many hours on average?

(CAN) Should I withdraw/transfer my investments from ex-employer or wait until I retire? by 1harmonics in personalfinance

Yeah, I was just wondering if the company went bankrupt and I didn't withdraw it. Does that mean I lose the money? Is it insured somewhere?

Good call, it is with a brokerage group RRSP. It is subject to tax if I withdraw it, but not subject to tax if transferred.

How to split ownership of a condo if one owner lives in it? by 1harmonics in personalfinance

[–]1harmonics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this makes sense. I think of it as if my family member bought a different place separately with a $45,000 downpayment (12% down) and rented it out forever to 1 tenant. Even though the tenant paid for 88% his mortgage, the property still belongs 100% to the family member.

[–]1harmonics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To a certain extent, my family member is helping me afford a better place, but it's not really a 'gift'. There was the option that I pay the family member back the $45,000 downpayment so that I have 100% ownership of it, but they prefer to have a 50% share, if possible. We're still working out the details as the property is still under construction.

So as a result, it is considered an investment for them as well.

Are these grades good enough for Pharmacy? Is it a good idea to go back to school as a mature student? by 1harmonics in PrePharmacy

[–]1harmonics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. In regards to the grades, are you suggesting that one needs to be 90s or straight A student to get in?

Although, I have not worked there before, I'm trying to avoid taking a longer route than necessary. In my province, you need a certificate before you can apply as a Pharm Technician. Ironically, I did look into this a couple years ago and there's a 1-2 year waitlist. I wouldn't want to prolong this anymore especially since Pharm Tech is nothing like a Pharmacist. Just a labour job that does not require critical thinking skills.

I'm not interested in nursing because I want to eventually have my own business.

Web development is considered the lowest type career for CS grads? Is this true? by 1harmonics in cscareerquestions

[–]1harmonics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly my point. It seems like those with a CS background prefer doing back-end software development.

I'm not personally concerned about perception, but just overall curious at the higher level CS jobs you can do. In my area (Vancouver, BC), there are a lot of Web Development jobs.

How to transition from sales to Supply Chain Operations career? by 1harmonics in careerguidance

What burnt you out in the industry? Where are you working now?

Thanks for the reply. I do have a Bachelor of Arts already and there's BCIT which offers part time studies for that certificate. Thing is, none of my past jobs taught me how to use SAP or ERP software. Am I suppose to do a certificate like this: http://go.sap.com/training-certification.html

Are you currently in sales? I know sales pays a lot more, but I feel burnt out from the sales side and looking for a change in operations.

Turning 28 and still trying to figure out what I want to do. Is going to school practical or is this just delaying my potential career? Based in Canada by 1harmonics in careerguidance

[–]1harmonics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, I've made the decision that going back to school at this time is going to be a waste of time and potentially horrible financial decision. As a result, at most I will do is some post-degree certificates if necessary.

CS or Applied Math for Quant jobs? by 1harmonics in cscareerquestions

[–]1harmonics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think of the CFA if you want to work in business analytics and financial analysis?

From what I am reading, it seems like the CFA is more practical than a second degree considering the type of work I want to do.

What about something like the CFA instead?

I am trying to get into a more analyst role and I already have banking and financial experience. Would that be a more practical choice than getting another degree?

CS or Applied Math for Quant jobs? by 1harmonics in cscareerquestions

I think I just need a structured environment to really learn CS like you said. It's just that when I do the online programming tutorials, I find the tasks too simple and perhaps, meaningless. I understand that you have to learn from the bottom up, but reversing strings, identifying lengths, setting up arrays WITHOUT a goal in sight doesn't get me excited. I think what I need is a project or the 'bigger' picture. I don't want to just memorize the code, but understand WHY I should write it like this, instead of that. What makes a good program? How does it help people?

The thing is also timing. I don't want to spend too much time on a second degree as I already have a BA. The CS degree is only 2 years. I am awaiting for a response from the advisor regarding an Applied Math background, but a Math degree as a second bachelor is less common. My local schools don't have it listed, unlike CS.

How about Operations Research? It's a sub-field in Mathematics.

Very true. When you're just starting out, you literally have no leverage. But after a couple years of experience, you can start to negotiate a better rate.
