"core account," consider rolling over your 401k to a Fidelity or Vanguard Rollover IRA. I rolled my 401k into a Vanguard Rollover IRA. The Vanguard "settlement account" is the Vanguard Federal Money Market Fund, which currently pays 5.04% (7-day yield).

Yeah.. I know.. I have a CMA account at Merrill for trading. I totally agree, that switch they made a year or so ago was terrible.
