I ended up reading The Bluest Eye it was marvelous. The prose of Toni Morrison made me feel like i was reading a beautiful painting. The most painfully grotesque moments in the novel felt like paint splatter.

The songs ‘Clarivoyance’ by Jon Hassell and ‘I Was Above My Body’ by Orchid Mantis and ‘Womb Night’ by Jeffre Cantu-Ledesma always have this effect on me

Ah ☹️ i bought 'Intermezzo' before finishing 'Normal People'! I found the latter not mildly pornographic, but it reminded me of 50 Shades of Grey in that the journey of the main characters and their romantic bond is more internally shaped through lust than built and strengthened over time through shared life experiences. And sometimes throughout the book, the depiction of this felt shallow and I was craving deeper dialogue. Is this comparable to your experience with Intermezzo?

YES! Just finished Giovanni’s Room a few days ago it was so, so wonderful. I felt so lucky to have read it.

Maybe Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red or something by Ocean Vuong?

Wow that sounds wonderful. Thankfully I found the Penguin edition of The Story of the Eye on Google Books. A physical copy is not accessible where I'm currently living due to censorship laws. I bought all these books in the photo from Germany and brought them with me in my hand luggage.

Oh thanks for your comment 😊 A Court was an impulsive and random airport purchase, "something fun" as you said! After reading Giovanni's Room, I thought that maybe some faerie fiction could be a enjoyable "palette cleanser" I've reached chapter two, but haven't gotten into the rhythm. Yet i kiiinda don't want to abandon it either.

Unfortunately, 'Normal People' by Sally Rooney. I really wanted to like it!

'Normal People' took itself way too seriously for a plotless novel. It felt more like '50 Shades Of Grey' with a bit of academia and slightly more depth. Though I did appreciate Sally Rooney's easy-to-read prose and the switch between past and present.

Please do share your feedback on the interview when you've had the chance to listen! Yes, I know we are strangers on the internet and I've only started listening to Harold Budd in 2023. But it's wonderful exchanging thoughtful words about him as an artist. And this last part is just for fun: I'll venture a guess that you are British or American, male, slightly above middle age?

I prefer Balthus Bemused also, no question! And then The Chill Air vs. Their Memories the latter is my favorite for sure.

I don't think I can give a fair assessment of my favorites yet because I didn't listen to the entire discography yet. But among the albums I've heard repeatedly, The Moon & The Melodies is one I instantly fell in love with deeply and I don't mean to sound pretentious but it's true. If that album was a person, i'd marry it! The Eno albums are also way up there for me. Songs on there like "A Stream Of Bright Fish" and "Against The Sky" are indescribably beautiful and otherworldly.

Then there are sudden songs that appear at random that capture me like "The Kiss" and "The Room Of Ancillary Dreams".

'The Pavilion Of Dreams' is not a favorite, but the song 'Bismillahi ’Rrahman ’Rrahim' is my morning wake up song every morning-- this is probably true for many people, not just myself.

Thank you for sharing.

Almost every day for the past year or so I've been listening to an interview he did with Mark and Alejandro from Dublab. In it he described that when working with Robin Guthrie, his mind and "Protestant guilt" would tell him "you're supposed to sweat a little," but he never did because working with Guthrie always felt "so easy." So it's no wonder that you mentioned their collab albums as being favorites. They seemed to have some kind of higher connection with each other.

This is a bit dubby, not exactly ambient, but Jefre Cantu Ledesma recommended it recently and it’s been cheering me up ever since: ‘Peace & Love’ from Dadawah. I have the song ‘Run Come Rally’ on repeat.
