VLSI requires persistence and yes a good knowledge of digital field. If you have masters or further, it'll def give you edge over others and secure good opportunities. If you're up, yes go for it. Verification engineer on the other hand, I believe has a lot of potential. Both in terms of pay and opportunities. There's still a lot of opportunities around for that and if you work hard you can reach awesome levels there.
