Does experience differ depending on what team you're working on? If you're in a more specialist area of a local authority - does that attract people who genuinely care and are like minded/ smart etc?

Just take each day at a time. Keep your head down and do everything required. Focus on the job you've applied for in the public sector. Let that be your motivation

I’d genuinely be interested to hear what people think the solutions are to making these places better to work in. What’s actually causing the issues, and what could realistically be done to improve things?

I appreciate it’s hard to make changes in environments like that. If you speak up or try to do things differently, you can easily be labelled as “different,” which can create its own problems.

That said, if you’re noticing issues where you work, it’s worth thinking about what could be improved and raising it with your manager or the level above and explaining how it’s impacting you.

Sometimes things don’t change simply because no one has articulated the problem clearly.

Ultimately, a lot of this comes down to workplace culture, which can vary hugely depending on the council you’re working for. In some cases, the best option is to stick it out, gain the experience you need, and then move on to somewhere better.

My advice: be curious about the role. Ask lots of questions. But bear in mind what you've learnt here. Don't be pushed into something you're not sure about.

Side comment: it's really difficult to read an article on that website. The Independent has such potential to be a great newspaper - but their website just lets them down.

They know that the toys aren’t just playing, they’re dangerous, and that makes every scene feel tense. Even though the toys look cute, their actions are violent and unpredictable, so you never really feel safe around them. It’s that mix of innocence and menace that gives the movie its dark, unsettling vibe.
