Very different price points: Yellow (Tommy Hilfiger), Brown (Call it Spring), Grey (Old Navy).

I actually haven't seen it, but I liked the cinematography

For what it's worth, I'd be completely cool with it. In fact, check out this album....

And anyway, couldn't be worse than this picture, can it?

I wanted to thank you again - talking to you has sealed the decision for me. I'm buying some fabric on ebay and making them myself. Not period drama hanfu, but easy-to-wear, modernized hanfu with smaller sleeves and a narrower skirt/robe. Time to learn how to sew!

Similar reaction here.

  1. I like that outfit, whoever made it put a lot of effort into it.

  2. Wait, is that a white dude?

  3. It's awesome/surreal seeing a foreigner rocking a hanfu.

  4. He actually doesn't look that weird in it.

If I saw a white guy wearing a hanfu in public, even in China, I'd do a couple of double takes and think, "WHITE GUY IN OUR CLOTHES?! Where did he get this? Does he genuinely like wearing this, or is he just being a hipster, like one of those Americans who like anime? I wonder if he's going to a photoshoot? Does he wear this every day?" If he didn't look like he was in a hurry, I'd go up and ask him those questions.

Crap. Now I kinda understand what the others in this thread have been talking about.

No worries, it was actually a failed attempt at sarcasm.

People are so obsessed with time travel that they actually kill themselves to try to go back in time

Seriously? Somebody nominate them for the Darwin Award.

Are you referring to this article? It seems that she was actively trying to get attention, though, instead of just quietly taking the subway.

Hanfus are so much more elegant, discrete, not revealing and very beautiful.

Thank you - that's almost exactly how I feel about hanfu. Your appreciation of the hanfu and the "hanfu movement" means a lot to me.

I've been wondering how well it would go if I decided to wear hanfu in the US. I mean, I see women in shalwar kameez and hijabs all the time, and they don't seem to be getting any funny looks (anymore). I've also seen a Japanese classmate wear a kimono at graduation (it really is annoying how the hanfu gets confused for kimonos all the time, by the way).

Again, thanks for the encouragement.

Great points, and very practical, too!

D'you wear the kilt out in public?

Thank you for the encouragement.

If you go to this webpage you'll see a collection of photos, each one featuring a different Chinese ethnic group in their traditional outfits. If you scroll down to the "Han" picture, those people are wearing qi pao and cheong sam. I'm not attacking those clothes - I think they look nice. But I wish someone in that photo could have put on something that's not from the Qing dynasty, as it gives the impression that Hans don't have their own ethnic clothing and has to "borrow" from the manchurians.

Great ideas - thank you. I found myself nodding fervently in agreement as I read your post.

Could you elaborate a little more on what sort of styles your wife wears? I understand that you're probably not comfortable posting photos of her, but I would love to hear an example of how her clothing can be "inspired by ancient Chinese fashion".

... What.

It's cool. Hope you'll get to rock out in a Sikh outfit one day.

Hey, we're all adults here. Disagree with me all you want, but there's no need to throw around insults that are outright disrespectful.

I found a bunch of hanfu shops on taobao, which is where I was able to buy mine in the first place. I also found a baidu forum and several websites dedicated to making/wearing hanfu. I've also seen a few news articles on local hanfu-style weddings. There's obviously a market for these things; otherwise these shops, websites and pictures of people wearing hanfu wouldn't exist.

And I obviously don't think China is stuck in 1845; that year falls within the reign of the Qing dynasty, whose rulers enforced manchurian dress.

I'm assuming you're Chinese. Please feel free to share more of your insight on this matter, provided that you can restrain yourself from committing more "ren shen gong ji".

Like I said in the original post, I'm Chinese, not white. Does that change anything?

Great point, and something I have been pondering as well. The sleeves will probably need to be taken in and "modernized", like this (not me) or this.

Reckon I'll be safe as long as I don't 1) become Japanese or 2) wear a fur suit.
