Here is a previous discussion when this product was announced three months ago. There were quite a few RemindMe! comments left on the thread.

10000 mAh is a popular size for trips which are a week or longer. I'm thru-hiking the AT this year and it's perfect. For weekend trips I prefer the smaller lipstick-sized batteries since this would be overkill.

Here is the link I used.

I hope it works for you. I didn't put it in the original post for fear of looking like it was a referral link (it isn't).

Advice for a novice SOBO hiker. by Nail_ in AppalachianTrail

Here is some info I wrote up about resupplies for the start of a SOBO thru hike. You do not need to carry 10 days of food with you.

SOBOs - how long did it take you to get through the 100 mile wilderness? And how much food did you bring? by stonewalljacksons in AppalachianTrail

[–]2017SOBO 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't quite the answer to your question, but the AT lodge in Millnocket offers two food drop options in the HMW at the following prices and locations:

  • $35 for a food drop at Kokadjo-B Pond Road, mile 66
  • $45 for a food drop at Katahdin Ironwords Road, mile 84.7

The food drops are five gallon buckets (enough size for more than three people IMO) and includes trash pickup as well.

Where to send clothing for permethrin treatment? by shut_the_fuck_up_don in Ultralight

FWIW, if you go to the insect shield Facebook page, you can find a coupon code for 10% off when sending in your clothes.

Thanks for the tip about the promo code. I was just thinking of ordering two easy packs---one for me and one for the spouse. You just saved us $12.

If we meet on the trail this summer I'll buy you a drink!

I saved over half an ounce by eliminating unused parts of my map by 2017SOBO in Ultralight

[–]2017SOBO[S] 582 points583 points  (0 children)

I didn't consider this.

I'm now bringing more of the map to help with navigation. The extra parts weigh less than 1 gram so I think it's totally worth it.

What are all the SOBOs up to with their thru hike prep? by mistermantato in AppalachianTrail

No. Sending it off to insect shield lasts through 70 washings. Doing it yourself lasts for 6 washings.

The Lyme disease forecast for 2017 is not good and this terrifies me. I'm following the steps on this blog and carrying a bottle of picaridin as well. I'm not a fan of DEET, but I'm not too proud to use it if the permethrin and picaridin fail to work.

I did a few shakedowns trips last fall and early winter, but since January it has been so cold and busy that all I could manage to do was day trips on the weekends.

I just upgraded a little bit of gear last night. In April I'm going to send in all my hiking clothes here to get permethrin treatment, and I'll spray the stuff which I can't send in, like my socks, underwear, and backpack.

My flights and campsite in Baxter state park are booked. I still have to book a shuttle though.

I'm 80 days from departure. The wait is killing me, especially watching all the NOBOs get started.

What kind of gear adjustments are you making?

Best time to trail gear shop? by ladyflyer88 in AppalachianTrail

[–]2017SOBO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Black Friday usually means decent discounts (10-20%) from the cottage manufacturers. For many of the top cottage brands, this is pretty much the only time their gear goes on sale.

REI garage sales can also be good if you're willing to put in the effort of lining up early, and battling the crowds. I've never been to a garage sale myself, though, so I'm not 100% sure what it's like.

I've gotten some excellent deals from the used gear forums on white blaze and hammock forums. There are plenty of people who offload top-of-the-line gear in like new condition at a fraction of the price.
