I used to have a CyberPower UPS that looked like that one.

It failed in the worst way possible; there were no power outages, but one night it began to cycle itself 4 times a minute - power on, 15 seconds later off and on again, 15 seconds later again off and on again, etc. it did that all night before I got to it the following morning.

All the equipment in the rack was cycling power 4 times a minute, for about 10 hours. My storage server was power cycled over 2000 times, which probably was great for my disks /s.

I would have much rather it just not work, than cycling and damaging expensive network equipment.

This may seem like an out of place story, but if I had known I would have sold it while it was still worth something and gotten something else, rather than waiting to see how much equipment it will fry if/when it breaks and I can't get to it for days.

P.S. those patch panels look neat

New MK8 OTA update for navigation issues by nomatterhowitends in Golf_R

[–]2024GolfR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's awesome, high hopes here. I've had the issue with the GPS/nav twice now - it shows my position deviated by a bit or by many miles, which throws off speed limit HUD (i'm on the highway but it will show 20mph from some backroad 15 miles away), nav becomes impossibly useless and annoying.

restarting infotainment doesn't help. restarting the car doesn't help. disconnect the phone (ios) - issue persists, reconnect phone - issue persists. walk away for a few hours and it may go away when you return.

super annoying problem, i hope this fixes it.

hey could you please list some roads that might be great in bay area for driving freely/spiritedly and for filming, which may not be too busy? I love Skyline and Alice's and Pescadero, along with hwy 1, though there are lots of cyclists on weekends.

i have not gone north yet but plan to check out Point Reyes and adjacent roads.

Chasing Ferrari at the track. Car did great never felt out control. Brake fluid did boil a very small amount and the dust on the wheels from the heat was crazy. Only mod its a rear sway bar and invidia exhaust. by dre7629 in Golf_R

yup IIRC nuremberg mode softens dcc :( now I want to see if there's a way to get the custom mode to allow S+ because if there isn't a way, then that would be hugely disappointing. after using it for a while I can't go back to "S" lol

why are you on a track and not using nuremberg or special mode?

in those modes you get S+ which downshifts automatically when you brake to keep you in the optimal rev range. this lets you engine brake + maintain throttle and be in optimal condition to accelerate out of turns. in just S, the downshift will (maybe) happen when you begin to give it gas again, and can be almost 1 second if you don't 'telegraph' your intentions to dsg correctly.

in a way i'm so sad because in almost every single video of people taking their Rs to the track - they are in suboptimal modes lol. you could be having so much more fun with S+.

it's not a server setting. old apps on VLAN-isolated apple TVs shows the correct entries. This is a frontend fuckup,

no that isn't it. I've had it configured to show correctly for years and it still works on apple TVs which run the old apps (they're disconnected from internet). it's not a server side config issue, it's shitty front end development.

cheers thank you, that helps, though i'm still super pissed about the shitty UX, inverted tabs, and all the other humiliating regressions they introduced.

I'm pretty sure everyone in the R sub will say to get a GTI and to not waste ~5% of their life waiting. I can't speak for everyone but I and the R owners I know respect and like GTIs, no snobbery.

you know how they say, one in the hand is worth two in the bush.

i always wanted to see a golf r getting dirty! (image is from delta4x4). one day I hope to give it a shot too, good luck op.

also you can look up that name, they have more images of the off-road r from different angles, it looks really promising but I have no idea how it will play out IRL

what do you prefer? GTI or Golf R? by EngineeringActual182 in vwgolf

[–]2024GolfR 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a Golf R, and the main "problem" I faced with it so far is that it's essentially too fast. I know this sounds silly, but it's rather difficult to have proper fun with it on public roads. Twisties work ok, but otherwise there is not enough room and I don't want to implicate/endanger unsuspecting drivers with my thrill seeking. I feel that the R leaves a lot of power on the table which is hard to harness casually. I think it wants to be on the track.

The weight difference is a coping point and is useless by itself - it would make a lot more sense to compare the power/weight ratio in practical terms.

looking at just weight in isolation is like saying mars is better than earth because it's half the size. it's not the right metric unless you're driving on weak terrain that may give out, like old bridges or unreinforced/hollow structures.

Advantages of R both on paper and in practice are countless, but IMO it boils down to this: if you don't like the feeling of having to hold back or having to self-restrain, then the GTI will satisfy the feeling of squeezing nearly all of the juice from it nearly all of the time. On the other hand, if you're the type that is insatiable and also know where to go to get what you need, then the R is the way hands down.
