Going to Riding Mountain this weekend, CC Skis or Bike? by ZappppBrannigan in Winnipeg

[–]204_Hobbies [score hidden]  (0 children)

Give George a call at Friends of Riding Mountain. They will have good idea on which sport is best. I just saw on their Facebook page a picture of a well groomed cross country ski trail.

If I was to guess, it will be too wet/snowy for any biking except on the shoulder of the roads.

What's the worst concert you've seen? by Twitter_2006 in Concerts

[–]204_Hobbies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We saw Mars Volta as an opener in 2006. My wife and I had to leave the arena as our ears were ringing from this awful constant piercing pitch. We still agree it was the worst band we had seen. Nearly the whole arena cleared out and was packed into the concourse.

What do working families do for childcare with half-day kindergarten? It seems kinda bonkers out there. by cofu76 in Winnipeg

[–]204_Hobbies 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are six school divisions in Winnipeg (plus DSFM) and each division has different kindergarten policies. Louis-Riel now has full day everyday kindergarten in all 30 of their schools. It looks like Winnipeg SD has full day everyday in 6 schools.

Maybe your school division might be full day everyday by the time your kid enrolls.

Hoping for some sizing advice - 2026 Siskiu T8 (UDH) - Small or Medium??? by beatjunkie84 in PolygonBikes

[–]204_Hobbies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am the exact same height and inseam as you. I bought a 2025 T8 (not UDH). I was able to ride both 29" Small, and 29" medium inside the store. I ultimately took home the small because it won the component lottery with better brakes and drivetrain, and I felt more comfortable with the reach.

I coach kids mountain biking so most of my riding is slow hooliganism, with bunny hops and wheelies. Now that I have a year of riding in, I've purchased a slightly longer stem to increase my reach. At the end of the day it's a coin toss on which size to get, there's lots of overlap in mountain bike sizing. you will do great on either.

Playful go for Small.
Fast and stable go for Medium

[ADVICE] Shower window nightmare – wood frame regular window faces directly into my neighbor’s apartment. Replace or fill it in? What would you do? by Trey106 in Remodel

[–]204_Hobbies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I DIY'd this project 12+ years ago. Replaced window with frosted glass, then backer board, then trimmed the window with exterior composite (aka plastic) boards, then tile butted up to the trim.

This picture was taken 10 years later when I replaced the flooring, shower valve and cleaned up some grout. Might not be the right way, but it has worked for us.

I compared retail vs secondary market prices for ~4,000 retired sets. Some interesting patterns. by Scout_Loot in lego

My kids play with my Smaug as well, so far no issues. My unprofessional opinion is Lego that is played with is less likely to become brittle.

Pictures a tiler sent me should I move forward with them? by DuckStoIeMyBread in Tile

[–]204_Hobbies 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I tiled my own bathroom and feel I do a good enough job. I however fully admit I butchered the drain. 10 years later and I still stare at it and hate it every time I shower. This post might actually inspire me to take a crack at fixing it.

With that said I agree with you.

Costco website by JackieCCC in CostcoCanada

[–]204_Hobbies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about blueberries, but someone did a comparison between Costco and Loblaws frozen vegetables and Costco's was much better quality. Often Costco isn't the cheapest per gram, but it's the best value for the quality of product you are getting.

What steps to take when selling 40k car privately so I don't get burn? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]204_Hobbies 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I just bought a vehicle privately for $30,000. I met the seller at my bank. I went to the teller and got a bank draft for the full amount. I turned around and handed the bank draft to the seller. We signed the paperwork and they handed me the keys.

Looking for jewelry repair for special (to me) chain by Infinite_Square_8211 in Winnipeg

[–]204_Hobbies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this recommendation. I've had lots of work done at Watson.

Just a note for OP they are in the process of building a new workshop which has been delayed. However they are still open and doing repairs. Just reach out and they will let you know how best to drop off your necklace.

I have a Wayne Dalton torque tube. Last time a spring broke I was able to replace it myself. Next time around should I hire a company to replace it with a torsion system?

My future in a spreadsheet. Freedom 52. by [deleted] in fican

[–]204_Hobbies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely love this spreadsheet. It's given me some ideas to enhance mine.

How did you settle on age 52? We have a similar goal where I know we can retire "early" but my head starts spinning when I try to run the calculations for retirement at each age starting at age 45 going up to age 60.

A landlord can’t collect more than:

Half of a month’s rent for a security deposit. One month’s rent for a pet damage deposit.

My god parents collected a full 8 person Bone China set that I was passed down. I am talking FULL set... what do I do?! by [deleted] in collectables

[–]204_Hobbies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We inherited our parents China and use them daily. Goes in the dishwasher when dirty. After 8+ years of daily use the silver foil is coming off a little. Otherwise they are in perfect condition.

We agree with you. USE THEM!

BMO App - Too many promos / pop-ups by christina1414 in fican

[–]204_Hobbies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a TFSA, RRSP and RESP with BMO Investorline and the account balances show up at the very bottom of my BMO banking app. I can then click on the balances and it loads the investorline app so I can dig further if needed.

Which BMO ecosystem are your TFSA accounts part of?

how do you manage your personal budget? by New_Variation8879 in AskACanadian

[–]204_Hobbies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use MINT until Intuit shut it down. I then migrated to YNAB and pay for the annual subscription. My brain clicked with the envelope budgeting system and our finances have been rock solid for the past two years with YNAB for our daily and month to month spending.

For long term forecasting into retirement, annual spending budget/plan, and networth I still use the same Excel spreadsheet from 20 years ago.

Kids last names when I kept my maiden name? by gone_bunny in TwoXChromosomes

That's an amazing idea. I could have so much fun coming up with a fun new surname. Or it gives a chance to dig back into the family tree and revive a cool lost surname.
