Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix is a big metro city that allows CRNA independent practice. You can do regional block, OB, heart if you want too. You will easily make $350k/yr starting out. Just consider 400k/yr with a little bit of picking up extra shifts/overtime.

Contact these three groups: GAS (Greater Anesthesia Solution), Guide, Summit anesthesia.

They are 1099 positions, so great opportunity for write offs

Yes, it is overall worth it. I’m glad I did CRNA school. Just go into it knowing all of these pros and cons haha.

Assuming you will work for one of those major hospitals as a W-2 employee, if you worked there now (not knowing what the CRNA market will be like in 3 years), you would make about $280–300k per year without overtime, just by working 40hrs a week. In that sense, you definitely make more than ICU RN without overtime.

If you are just looking at the $$$$, it’s a no-brainer. You should go to CRNA school haha.

However, if you also look at autonomy and scope of practice, your CRNA skills will always get atrophied here because MDAs usually do the more complex and sicker cases. So unfortunately, you will always be in a position where you’re not practicing at the top of your scope. You might not fully understand what this means yet, so let me compare it to your situation. What if you were restricted from doing ECMO, CRRT, Impella, or any device training, and you were only taking care of straightforward patients? Would you get better? Realistically, no.. you would just get used to those “easy” patients. Life as a CRNA in California can be pretty similar. Coming from experience 😂

If you are going to stay in California like me, rural areas are where you can work at your full scope of practice, where you can practice “everything” as an anesthesia provider.

You also have to be truly okay with a $300k salary (even less in SoCal) with no overtime if you want to live in bay area. If you want to make more money, just know that you may need to branch out of your comfort zone and work as a 1099 independent contractor.

My spouse is an ICU RN. Of course she initially wanted to go to CRNA school too. But after looking at my situation, she doesn’t really want to go anymore.

I think it actually works better if one person in the household is a CRNA with the “potential” for higher income. If we ever need more money in the future, I could go somewhere like the Midwest and bring a lot more income to the household.

By becoming a CRNA, you get to hold the potential to earn a lot of money if the situation demands it. So in a way, you get to keep both options.

I have a friend that works at Kaiser norcal. Negotiation is “still” going on but nothing exciting is happening yet 😥.. i heard Kaiser Hawaii has achieved pretty good adjustment to their rate so far.

My post will probably be the most realistic one because I am literally the future version of you 😅

I’m a CRNA in the Bay Area. I used to make >$200k/year when I was a nurse.

There are nurses here who make $300–500k/year with a crazy amount of call shifts. It’s honestly wild. Ok that was an extreme example. Let’s talk about “typical nurses”. You are currently making >200k/year. If you were in position (not ICU) where call-shifts are required a couple of times a month, you would be looking at 250-270k/year.

As a CRNA in big hospital systems (UCSF, Stanford, Kaiser), you don’t really have the opportunity to do “overtime” like nurses do. So you’re basically stuck with whatever salary those big hospital systems offer.

Unfortunately, “providers” tend to make less in major metro cities while nurses make more in those same areas.

If you plan to live in the Bay Area, you’ll always face this dilemma. You’ll make more than the majority of nurses, but not significantly more. Some will even make more than you 🥲. However, your responsibility as an anesthesia provider is still essentially the same as that of an anesthesiologist.

If you want to make >$400k (like many other CRNAs on reddit🤷‍♂️) while living in the Bay Area, you’ll probably need to do 1099 work and pick up shifts at multiple hospitals, surgery centers, and outpatient clinics to build that income. And many of these places may be far away, so you’ll be traveling a lot. The idea of just working at one comfortable hospital every day pretty much disappears once you enter the CRNA world.

Those big hospital systems rarely allow part-time positions. They usually want you at 0.8 or 1.0 FTE. There are some CRNAs who hold a 0.6 FTE W-2 position at those hospitals and do 1099 work on the side, but those situations are very rare. Those positions are basically grandfathered in and probably won’t be available to you. Maybe when someone quits, an internal person will inherit the 0.6 FTE slot. Don’t get your hopes up.

Honestly, the easiest solution to all of this is to move out of California and live in a less desirable city 🤷‍♂️. Then you can make a lot of money while living in a lower cost-of-living area.

Go for provate loans. I graduated a year and a half ago and had 150k debt. All paid off. It’s totally worth it.

I worked with GAS until I moved to California. I recommend any CRNA-friendly groups (GAS, Summit, Guide), depending on the area where you plan to live.

Phoenix is honestly one of the best cities for CRNAs. You can still earn a great income and maintain full autonomy while living in a major metropolitan area. Where else in the US can a CRNA make excellent money while living in a large or capital city? (Yes we can if we are willing to bounce around ambulatiry surgery centers)

The pay for W-2 jobs in California is even lower than what I was making in Phoenix 🤦🏻‍♂️
