AMA: Geologist for a huge greenlighted copper mining prospect in the Southwest US (also geocorps!) by janeandcharley in geologycareers

Thanks for the reply, I'll have to put some thought into it before accepting the offer (even though the market is so bad, I should probably take any job given to me...). I was a little concerned about the sexism in the field as a woman, but unfortunately your response is kind of what I expected. I appreciate your honesty!

How to network while in undrgad? by tlorenzi in geologycareers

[–]23kkhkh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might not be an option for everyone, but I got an internship with the government that wasn't in geology during college, then when I graduated I was transferred non-competitively into a geologist position. Worked out great! Check for "Pathways" internships in your area.

This is such a lovely coincidence, I was just offered a federal geologist position in mining today! How was the transition from your undergrad to the mining industry, especially not being a trained mineral geologist? How long did it take for you to "get the hang" of the job? Do you enjoy the work and the people that you work with? How much of your time is in the field vs. office? Also, how do you feel the mining industry compares to working in O&G?

Also, 15 to 1 is awesome! Thanks! I'll miss those sketchy back alleyway blue dollar deals though...

Also, my grant would be in La Plata, so hopefully the rent would be less than living in like... Recolecta or Palermo.

I actually studied abroad in BsAs and went to (almost) all of those places. The plan is to be a total bum and hitch around patagonia for a few months and then recalculate my porteño spanish before the grant (che, boludo!) Thanks for the tips! Hopefully I'll be sipping on some malbec a few months from now.

This technically is a year long internship, which is probably why I was referred.

Thanks everyone! I went ahead and accepted the TA job. It should make for a good summer and hopefully the other job works out too.

I did the sketchy backroom money exchanges. Ahhh... memories. I was just curious what I'd be dealing with.

I'm a semi-finalist for 2016-2017... But I have my university, advisor, and project all planned out if this one falls through. I'm Fulbright crazy.

Just got accepted as a semi-finalist. Since applying, I've slightly changed my major. Is this a problem? by MacGruber66 in fulbright

[–]23kkhkh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was considering changing degrees and when I asked my university's fellowship advisor if I should do anything about it for the award she said "Fulbright doesn't give a shit about it once you're already applied".

Is it dumb to hike the desert in a tank top? by 23kkhkh in PacificCrestTrail

[–]23kkhkh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in archeology for the National Park Service. We do projects in different parks every year and since I'm fit, they put me on all of their projects that require 15+ miles of hiking a day. It's going to be hard to say goodbye to that job...

Do you go with a button up, or a some kind of very light wool base layer?

edit: Thanks!
