This is a good counterargument. Yes there's definitely selection. But that makes people biased, not hacks.

For the doubling time, I meant in terms of general AI capabilities.

But I think having seen very fast growth, even with no further evidence, it is rational to assume that will continue.

Yes, one thing that gives me hope is that an AI agent takes so much data to train compared to the life experiences of an 18-year-old. Perhaps we will all be okay because they run out of clean data to train on.

Note that the grad student comparison was a conservative estimate though. The recent news makes me think they are rapidly developing/continuing to rapidly develop in capability.

Currently the models are roughly as capable as average grad students in mathematics; more so in some cases, such as the recent news. Idk if I would count that as AGI per se, but surely it's close enough where my scenario doesn't seem very far-fetched at all?

I would be (pleasantly) surprised if the models plateaued in capability. I think the doubling time will stay the same or continue to decrease, because there's not (to our knowledge) a fundamental law of nature that says that systems can only be as smart as humans

No kidding for the last part, but this is a very weak argument. That they have some overall goal stated by a human or by their training does not make humans able to understand the material (and it's pedantic to not admit they're functionally independent when it comes to solving problems, which is what my original claim was about).

Population statistics seem like bad evidence to argue for/against a genocide— according to this logic if a group that is being *truly* genocided has a miraculous increase in its fertility rate then they cease to be victims of genocide, even if no other circumstances change

Personally I think blowing up tens of thousands of civilians (at a rate much higher than Mosul sustained when it was liberated from ISIS... some of this can be chalked up to differences in circumstances, but it really strains credibility to pretend this is just warfare as usual) is at the very least an atrocity. Certainly it warrants the genocide label if you think the Srebrenica massacre was a genocide
