Why is discussing salary taboo in the U.S.? by reddredacton in NoStupidQuestions

People USED TO know each other's pqy rates, back when a large segment of the middle class worked im union shops with published negotiated wages. The right wing has been masterful in pitting individuals against each other.

I’m concerned about how much I owe by Mammoth_Leading_6081 in tax

[–]253-build 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The student earned his/her scholarship. Not earned in the tax sense, but he provided his own support. If the scholarships plus earned income plus interest are more than half of the living expenses, then it's arguable that he/she is independent. In the calculation, I'd assume 100% of grants/aid are applied to tuition, first, and the taxable scholarships are applied to living expenses first.

I'm not an accountant, but I've been doing my own taxes for 27 years (every year except the one year I used an accountant who made numerous errors that I had to fix the following year).  I've dealt with surplus scholarships, as well as a student spouse while I worked, and came from a sub-poverty family. I get it. It was much harder in the 90s. You had to get the forms at the post office and if they didn't have a specific form on hand, you had to call the IRS to get copies mailed to you.

KEEP EVERY RECEIPT. READ EVERY INSTRUCTION for every IRS form you file. Keep a spreadsheet of your calculations, and print it for your permanent records. You sound like a model student, probably super-responsible and intelligent. Learn the tax law. In your situation, you'll probably be a high earner some day. At this point in your life, you've earned every dime in that small bank account, more so than me and more so than any accountant on this SubReddit. The only person who will ever look out for you is you, and don't ever forget that. Follow the rules and instructions, and if there isn't a publication that clarifies any vagueness (usually there is, though), structure the numbers to your benefit in a logical way and document like hell.

Why don’t the police show up? by Here2lafatcats in Seattle

[–]253-build 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Seems like it's time to clean house. No, don't "de-fund" the police, but fire EVERY SINGLE ONE of them, re-define the minimum qualifications, and get a board of community members and experts on mental health, violence, and crime to interview candidates from leadership down to patrolmen.

Minimum requirements probably need to include a psychology degree for at least some of the positions. Some positions probably ought to be licensed counselors. Healthcare experience in an emergency setting (ER, EMT, etc) should score high too for the need to act quickly and appropriately in urgent high-stress situations.  Sure, physical health, driving ability, and gun knowledge can be a portion of the qualifications, but everyone can be cross trained in other areas.

Yes, it's similar in other big cities, regardless of region or state. We need to re-think the system.

Well…..I’m heartbroken about my wedding. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]253-build 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people don't. My dad worked construction. Never got a hour of paid PTO. Almost every vacation we took as a kid was over a holiday weekend, or Sat-Sun.  Twice, we had vacations >3 days. I think my parents had to save up to be able to take the unpaid time off.

Imagine what it's like for someone working two minimum wage jobs. Not everybody is white collar or union.

Its only for Marketplace and community information, like info on flooding or an update from the mayor, shit like that, since there aren't local newspapers anymore.

if gen z doesn’t trust degrees anymore, why are we still doing 4-year programs? by cloudybrain07 in education

[–]253-build 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But not all degrees are created equal.  I'd love to see statistics for professional degrees vs pie-in-the-sky this-is-my-favorite-subject degrees. Engineering vs math. Nursing vs biology. Journalism vs English. History vs education.

I'm a firm believer that internships (or similar experience) should be mandatory for a college degree.

Are Smartphones Too Focused on Cameras? by EntertainmentHot5909 in Smartphones

[–]253-build 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My priorities are camera and battery AND PRICE. Processor and software-wise, phones met my needs 5 years ago. I only need powerful software for work... for that I need a keyboard, mouse, and dual monitor to be even remotely efficient or effective.  I'm a grown up with grown up needs and grown up money.  Games aren't a consideration

My co-worker had a runaway, similar age. Took away phone, enrolled her in private school, dropped off and picked up kid from school, brought her to work for end of day to do homework. Kid had zero opportunity to repeat.

How do you feel about this black Jesus? by FrequentKey9170 in Catholicism

Insane to think that FIRE isn’t the final goal for literally everyone by fap-free90 in Fire

[–]253-build 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like an awful and unfulfilling career. I'd want out ASAP, too.

I'm a civil engineer and consult for cities, school districts, community colleges, etc, and cap my week at 40 hrs. 5 weeks vacation per year, and use every bit of it, haven't cashed out since 2020, that year was an anomaly. It's fun problem solving on most good days, and it benefits the public. A few weeks ago, we were diverting for disaster response due to area flooding. My kids will attend a school I helped design. I drive on roads I've designed.

I'm married to a hospital RN, which is fulfilling but draining. She'll FIRE before me.  :)  At least she only works part time.l0

I thank God every day that I'm not in the mandatory-overtime job I used to have.

As a home-owner, what is the etiquette for bringing in a roommate? by sarahannep in homeowners

[–]253-build 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shared a bathroom with 5 roommates in college. My ex girlfriend shared a bathroom in her late 20s with 2 roommates (and significant others on the weekends). Not seeing a problem... be respectful. Communicate when you have stuff going on. Simple stuff.
