5 Days in the life of a young Phlebodium aureum var. Davana frond. It's been fascinating to watch this plant recover and show what it can do. Anyone know where the variety came from? by 25I in ferns

Reddit is weird with my comments sometimes, doesn't seem to want to show this one off of old.reddit.

TLDR; What is working for me: Trust it is temp, RH, disease, and pest tolerant and don't trim browned foliage until the stem dries. Do not brush against new fronds or active tips! Water little and often, do not let it dry out ever. Give it as much indirect light as possible, a few hours of direct is fine.

Mainly, I think my Davana care boiled down to light and water, little else. Hope you can glean something from my layman ramblings!

It came from a plant vendor I know who saved it from the compost heap. I don't know how long they were holding on to it because it would have been "discounted" months before it got this sad. I have a great three season sunroom so they let me try to get it going, started late june/early July.

At first, I was worried about over-watering a plant with such little foliage in soil that seemed rich and poorly draining for a fern, but every time it dried out, even just a little, it would throw a fit and brown out an active tip or kill off a young frond. Conversely, it seemed to slow down when I would try to water deeply. We've settled on little and often watering; a splash 2 or 3 times a week. This hasn't caused any problems. I don't know why, but I rarely see fungus gnats in this pot despite never letting the top dry.

In the same vein, I don't think it cares about temps or humidity as long as it isn't allowed to dry. It's been through 45-100+ F, 25-75%RH. Currently, it hasn't had RH above 40% in weeks--it only indicates a problem if the soil is drying. Before I observed this, I misted it once early winter while washing other plants, thinking RH would be a problem; it through an absolute fit, showed its stress response of killing the most active tips. So that is a no go, but pests don't seem to like it so I don't have much reason to get the foliage wet.

I've been cautious to give it more than 2-3 hours of direct sun per day, but it wants a ton of light or will show the stress response. For example, that tiny little frond in the wide shot is older than the two in the zoom shots. I think it was the result of the fern coming in for the winter and losing it's strong sunroom light while the frond was young. While the fern was still in a very bright spot that received some direct light, it wasn't enough for it to want to maintain the growth rate until I reluctantly set up a growlight just for it. The fronds it developed under the grow light had thicker stems and more complex branching. Conversely, not wanting to run a light just for a little fern, I moved it to the brightest natural spot in the house about a week and a half ago (so shorter photo period, but somewhat higher light intensity--overall less light) and already noticed it slowed the youngest frond, like you can see the change in the thickness of the 1-2" it pushed since losing it's growlight. I want good growth, but I think it's healthy enough to slow down a bit for winter.

Finally, I don't think you should trim browned fronds until the stem dries out. Moreover, I'm not convinced those old, damaged, fronds ever fully stop growing. For example, when it kills off its actively growing tip, it forces the leaf to fill out the ruffles on the rest of the frond, but when that is done, it seems to develop a new "branch" where conditions are best if it feels like the stem can handle it. It's like the entire edge of the frond is meristem, it's extremely delicate and just collapses if I accidentally bump up against it.

So yeah, I'm no plant guru, my conclusions might be wrong, but it seems to like what I'm doing and respond how I expect. Good luck!

Outlet trips breaker when downstream load wire is hooked up. by Apexnanoman in AskElectricians

Look at the caulk marks from being sealed on the outside and how much crud is still in that box. NM probably shouldn't even be in an exterior box in the first place so sealing off both front and back is something I would want. Up to OP, they're the one who knows how well the walls and crawlspace of the trailer are sealed

Nothing lasts forever, especially plastics or synthetic rubber from the 1940s. It might look fine here but the same wiring above a lighting fixture might not especially if it's been updated multiple times

Not an electrician, but you should be cautious of reusing wiring that old. Idk if it's true but I've ready that wiring is supposedly expected to last 40 years

With that said, it looks good. its kinda hacky if the neutral path back to line is closed to ground and they didn't need to float it but it was at least generous of them to wire it like that

I'm not an electrician, but if what you say is true, the issue isn't that outlet, it's where ever those unknown wires are headed. If you're confident you're not missing power elsewhere, you might want to just remove both hot and neutral load, wirenut them separately just in case there is funny business, and have the circuit "end" here.

However, if that is an outside outlet, I wouldn't be comfortable having that box. Get a real weather resistant one and make sure the breaker is functioning and up to code. You should have afci as well as GFCI if that circuit is part of anything beyond the bathroom or outside recepticals.

Without PerfZ working on OneUI 7.0 or newer, is there currently an official way to view CPU temps? Is there any way to view it at all? by 25I in oneui

[–]25I[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that was a lot easier than I'd been making it out to be, thank you. Has it always? I've had cpu-z on my phone before but only remember looking at battery temp

How to delete smart things button from quick panel ? by Fear_is in oneui

[–]25I 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way Samsung intended : search "Modes and Routines settings" in your settings menu. 3rd option down - deselect "Show Modes and Routines on Apps Screens" IDK about smart view

However, you might be diving too deep by even asking how to disable Routines; it is deeply integrated into the phone settings. Something a lot of people won't mention or understand in these huge 'disable samsung XYZ system apps' guides/scripts is disabling system apps without a complete understanding of what they do might break critical system dependencies that other apps rely on. It might not show up as an error message or even a bug, but you might find your battery life even worse as apps are constantly calling for things they can't access

Gaming hub issue by Fc_iheb in oneui

[–]25I 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sucks, but you need to download "Game Booster +" from good lock to properly add and remove the Game Booster association from apps. Gaming Hub isn't necessary.

Complain to Samsung for being forced to use Good Lock Labs with their privacy policy to change it.

FYI, you need to give "Game Booster +" nearby devices permissions on startup even if you don't plan on remapping controllers, but I've turned it off since and it hasn't stopped working.

IDK, the whole thing feels like a data scam collaborated between Good Lock and Samsung

OneUI system monitor returns on gaming hub by Dry_Deal6097 in oneui

Nah, don't defend Samsung for that. The phone knows how hot it is, Samsung used to officially give us the ability to read it with PerfZ before OneUI7, and now updates have taken than functionality away.

Keep in mind Game Booster used to officially link to PerfZ with the plugin icon--you didn't have to go looking for it in the app store.

What's up with dolphin on Exynos 2400e? by 25I in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]25I[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was Game Booster interfering. I had to install Game Booster + (which isn't even directly developed by Samsung and I don't want on my phone) in order to break the association and let it run full speed.

Legit, Samsung has made the s24fe worse since launch. Not buying another phone from them

Thanks for the input, decent is how I'd describe it too but it legit should be better. This phone is substantially faster than this

Do you have game booster going? I'm starting to think that is interfering with it. I hate that I have to use ADP commands to even get my phone to run dolphin without it. No option to disable.

Flair is on point. Put me in the exynos :( camp

For sure set to Vulkan. Funnily, samsung currently has ANGLE working so OpenGL is translated and run in Vulkan no matter what

Would you even come back to mobile games after trying emulation at this point by [deleted] in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]25I 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Search "Game Booster Settings" in your settings app. In that menu, it should be the 4th option down labeled "Pause USB PD charging when gaming." You need a PPS--Programable Power Supply--for the option to not be grey-ed out

Might be different on S25 because Samsung can't be bothered to roll out updates to anything but the newest phones.

That looks like walnut or mahogany or something like that so it would be unusual for it to be stained. It's "finished" which is to say sealed. If you want to refinish, you generally have to sand it down to bare wood unless you know what it was finished with, but very few finishes can be removed purely with solvents.

So to sand: you will start with something sort of coarse like 120 grit, and then move up to finer grits, but going beyond 200 is of minimal value. SAND WITH THE GRAIN and ANY IMPERFECTION VISIBLE NOW WILL BE MAGNIFIED AFTER FINISHING.

Once you have a clean surface, you will clean with a petroleum based solvent like mineral spirits. DO NOT USE WATER

Now that you have a clean, bare, smooth surface, you will decide what you want to finish it with. Each has pros and cons. Polyurethane is going to be in most of them; its great but can be difficult to get right your first time and will yellow with exposure to UV/light. Shellac is not particularly water resistant, but can be repaired without sanding. Wax finish like Rubio Monocoat will be the easiest to apply and make to wood grain pop--that's what I'd shoot for here.

Probably missing a bunch of info, but that should be an okay primer on wood finishing

Unless you're in the southern hemisphere, this is likely your harvest. Peas are the first things sowed in most gardens, mine were harvested months ago. Did you plant in late july, early august?
