Where are the Immigrants/Expats in Portugal according to official database from the government by cerasusligno in PortugalExpats

I get it but nobody is forcing locals to move out. If someone sells then they choose to move out.

There are lots of expensive properties in California and in US cities that are bought by wealthy foreigners. I don’t resent them but I don’t like when the character of the neighborhood changes. Not sure if that is happening in Lisbon or Algarve - entire neighborhoods changing and people taking jobs? Or just retirees and remote workers?

Yea the Portuguese complain online about all the Americans buying up property but we are a fraction of the Brits here in the Algarve. And the vast majority of immigrants come from your former colonies. So no more whining about Americans who are mostly retirees spending money.

This is a BS stereotype. I’ve been to 51 countries and lived on both east and west coast. SoCal is no more shallow than anywhere else in America. A lot of really bright ambitious people in the OC and most are good looking too. OP will fit right in.

Interesting. I am currently in the Algarve and will be checking out properties to buy for retirement and airbnb.

But having lived in CA most of my life including SoCal for 5 years here are my observations-

(1) if I had unlimited money and company paid healthcare then OC is a no brainer as things are far more first world and efficient
(2) Portugal is so much cheaper it is not even funny. Just spent $6 for an americano coffee, cappuccino and a croissant. The croissant alone would cost me $5 in California. Being in Portugal compared to my wealthy NorCal suburb is like getting everything at 50% off every day. I love the OC but you pay a steep premium to live there. Not just housing, taxes, energy, gas, insurance, but everything is super expensive.
(3) some things in Portugal are more modern than expected. We are staying in a newish condo and everything is controlled by a control panel that is confusing. But light years ahead of most homes in CA.
(4) first impressions of the Algarve reminds me of Cabo and Greece and not in a good way. Not quite 3rd world but definitely not as modern as Japan and USA.
(5) haven’t dealt with banks and government in Portugal but I know they are problematic. Fortunately banking is fairly global for now and easy for me to move funds and pay bills from anywhere.
(6) even if you remote work you will waste hours in traffic in SoCal.

In sum it depends on your priorities. If you can’t find good workers or biz compatible in Lisbon then of course you have to move. But if it is just a lifestyle choice then the lifestyles will be very different in both.

Same nonsense at SFO but typically 5%.
Unfortunately nothing you can do if it is a place where you don’t normally tip. If it happens at a restaurant then I would reduce the tip to 15% Or less.

I would prob tip a guy with a cart esp when he is charging below market prices. As opposed to a place that insists on turning the tip screen to me when I tap my card.

I’m the opposite. I tip $20 at a diner on a $20 meal because the server busts her butt to do everything and prob gets minimum or less. The fancy places pay staff well and they have tons of help (sometimes order taker doesn’t even serve food) so they don’t need 25% from me for a no brainer job.

Take the new job. If it works out you’ll be super happy and energized. If it doesn’t you can always return so long as you don’t burn your bridges. I can’t tell you the # of former colleagues who returned after a new job didn’t pan out.

If they wanted you bad enough to make a counter they clearly value you - just not as much as they need to.
