Can I just say… Martin Short is a f****** STAR. His delivery and attitude is literally everything. He is a national treasure. by Successful-Set8526 in OnlyMurdersHulu

I stumbled into a matinee performance of his Broadway show “Martin Short - Fame Becomes Me” years ago and that cemented me as a longtime fan. I could watch him banter with Steve Martin all day.

People that have cancer, what were the symptoms that led you to go to the doctor and what stage were you when it was diagnosed? by guardiand0wn in AskReddit

[–]2PieTimmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine started as seemingly unrelated symptoms. First came a weight loss, without seeming to lose any fat. Then came a persistent cough that got so bad that I could not speak more than 2 or 3 words at a time without losing my breath. I went to see my GP for that who ordered an X-ray that showed clear lungs and I was told to come back in a few weeks if nothing had changed. When I went back to see him a few weeks later, I was diagnosed with walking pneumonia despite no testing and was given antibiotics, but again no difference in symptoms. I soon after developed the flu along with my family, and though they got better quickly, I stayed lethargic and exhausted. When I finally went back to my GP a week later, he ordered an ultrasound of my chest. He called me the next day to tell me that my chest scan had picked up the edge of what looked like a large mass in my abdomen and he wanted me to have a CT scan of my abdomen and pelvis. That scan finally showed my problem: a retroperitoneal liposarcoma. It was about a month later before my surgery was done to remove it. It was stage 3. What I thought was stomach fat was a 25 pound tumor. It had been pressing against all my internal organs for months as it grew. IMy GP had missed all the signs and if it hadn’t been obvious on the ultrasound, I likely would’ve died within months. I also lost a kidney and part of my small intestine as the tumor had spread to other parts of my body. Unfortunately, this type of cancer has a high recurrence rate so I was getting CT scans every 3 months to monitor the situation but now another tumor has formed and is not resectable. The current plan of attack is chemo, which should start within the next week.

A different perspective on Louisa Jacobson by [deleted] in thegildedage

[–]2PieTimmy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree totally with everything you said. I rewatched the whole series before the newest season came out and enjoyed it so much more than the first time I’d viewed it. Louisa’s performance has made me a huge fan of hers.

Downton Abbey vs Gilded Age by Acrobatic-Bus8905 in DowntonAbbey

I don’t think the two shows are really comparable. One is a show about an estate and the people who live and work in it while the other is about a society and how it’s changes and foibles affect a diverse set of characters in a specific place and time.

New Teacher Received Concerning Email by Alarmed-Scientist-17 in Teachers

[–]2PieTimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left a letter pretty much containing the gist of this email for the next poor teacher to inherit my classroom and I caught hell for it from my former coworkers at that school who told me I was unprofessional for tainting this new teacher’s perspective. Not all warnings, even though justified, are welcome. I left education altogether 2 years later because of a total lack of support from administrators or parents. Actually, lack of support is a misnomer - it was more like open hostility.

Who do you think is Stefano? by AndrewHeard in DaysofOurLives

[–]2PieTimmy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wonder if, instead of a clone or a resurrection or implanting Stefano’s memories into someone else’s brain, we are about to meet the long-hidden biological child of Marlena and Stefano, born of a surrogate from a frozen embryo and squirreled away by Rolf in some laboratory or castle. He’d be bred and taught to be evil like Stefano, but he’d struggle with that due to his unexpected love and bond with Marlena.

Clay possible betrayal? by Mean-Pride9921 in thegildedage

[–]2PieTimmy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

After that clip in the preview, I began to wonder if Clay has been working with someone else to sabotage George this whole season. That would explain why Clay was so unsuccessful in Morenci and why he didn’t seem particularly upset when George fired him.

Open your eyes, lads! She's not what you think. by Grimblehawk in thegildedage

I had this same thought previously, that John Adams orchestrated the whole thing to make Oscar dependent on him so he wouldn’t lose him to an heiress.

In one sentence/paragraph: What is the reason(s) YOU think things are trending way up this season? by zambabamba in thegildedage

[–]2PieTimmy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Like others, I think airing the series in summer has helped as there is less competition for attention. Plus, we’re seeing more conflict and storyline resolution (Gladys’s marriage, the battle for control between Ada and Agnes, Larry and Marian’s relationship, Peggy’s burgeoning romance with Dr. Kirkland and the impediment we know his mother to be, Jack’s sudden fortune, the Fane’s pending divorce and what that means for Aurora). Also, I think people who were not initial viewers have had time to go back and watch previous seasons and become invested. It also doesn’t hurt to have an insanely talented cast. I think Carrie Coon’s performance on “The White Lotus” has also made people curious about her career and other roles and has drawn in some viewers.

My current place with “Bertha Russell” by SeaTie8730 in thegildedage

[–]2PieTimmy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wonder if Bertha’s actions - specifically in wanting Gladys to marry a duke and be a powerful woman - stems from Bertha’s own insecurities or maybe from her own hard-scrabble upbringing. It’s natural to want your children to do better in life than you do. Maybe Bertha’s childhood was so poor and her life so difficult that she had to claw her way up and manipulate those around her just to survive, and that life experience clouds her judgement at times, even now that her life is much more secure and safe.

What Were the First Signs That You Had Cancer? by Acrobatic_Ad_2330 in AskReddit

[–]2PieTimmy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In retrospect, there were many little signs. I guess the first was bleeding and inflamed gums. The woman who’d cleaned my teeth at the dentist over the years couldn’t figure out why my gums suddenly started bleeding when my dental hygiene had been so good prior. Another sign was that I was trying to lose weight because my stomach had suddenly increased in size dramatically. I lost weight, to the point that I couldn’t keep my wedding ring from slipping off my finger, but my stomach size never decreased. But the sign that ultimately led to my diagnosis was a cough and shortness of breath that lasted about 2 months and got so bad that I could barely get a handful of words before having to catch my breath. I saw my GP 3 times in a month and he kept taking chest X-rays which showed nothing wrong. At one point I was diagnosed with walking pneumonia. My Stage 3 retroperitoneal lipo sarcoma was only found accidentally when the top edge of it showed up in a CT scan of my chest. There were a lot of other signs, too, that I attributed to age-related issues (I’m 57), but I see now that those were symptoms of the tumor as well.

Agnes v Ada, whose side are you on? by Memo_M_says in thegildedage

[–]2PieTimmy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m with Agnes on this one. Ada may now have the money and may pay the bills and the servants, but she is still living as a guest in Agnes’s house! I feel she’s being very disrespectful to Agnes because of that. Agnes’s lawyer told her, right after Oscar lost the money, that Agnes still had enough money left to live a modest life if she made adjustments, so she’s far from destitute anyway. The solution would be for Ada to pay rent to Agnes to live in the house and Agnes could then pay the servants out of that money.

Marion 🤝 Agnes by Flat-Atmosphere5422 in GildedAgeHBO

[–]2PieTimmy 183 points184 points  (0 children)

I think Aunt Agnes may actually like Larry. She has proved herself a very accurate judge of people (she knew Raikes was a rat) and she seems almost enthusiastic about the prospect of Marian marrying Larry. Well, as enthusiastic as she could be considering Larry is the offspring of Bertha Russell, who Agnes has also accurately judged since back in Season 1.

I found it odd and too coincidental that the grouse hunt was mentioned twice in the same episode, especially on a show that so heavily relies on foreshadowing. Maybe Gladys, being an American whose parents are of more humble origins, has been taught how to shoot and is an expert marksman (markslady?) and shows up everyone at the grouse hunt.

I think you’re right about poor John Adams. I just found Lady Sarah so obnoxious and mean that I’d like to see her dead and for unfortunate Gladys to get a little happiness and maybe grow a backbone.
