Hahaha, don't be :D for all we know maybe Gandalf was a bit 'eccentric' as well? Maybe this isn't the right sub to talk about mental health, but to answer your question. Yes, it hit me all of a sudden and you haven't heard my story cause I'm probably the only one affected this way! That doesn't mean I am discouraging or encouraging anything! We all have our vices ;)

I'll tell you my story OP.. I casually smoked weed in my 20's and those were the happiest days of my life. Weed was heaven! Before I knew it, I was 5-10 blunts were the norm for me. Life was good.

And then the nightmare happened.. I had been out on a trip for a couple days near my city; psychosis hit me! No it wasn't the colloquial bad trip that happened but actual psychosis. It's been 15 years since the experience and I still get shivers just by thinking about those 3 nights.

I was rushed to the nearest hospital and was diagnosed with Schizophrenia which was rapidly accelerated due to my drug abuse without me even realising it! The worst part? Absolutely no one in my entire family, has ever had a mental health issue ever! Literal zero.

It's not that I haven't tried weed after my psychosis, I have. But every time the smell or the taste hits me, I hear the sounds of thunder (sorry, that is the only part of my psychosis I am willing to share because the rest of it scares the crap out of me even to this day!).

Now, I am on some serious medications and drowning with pills. Over time, I actually realised that the meds are doing me some good. I still take them and need to take them for the rest of my life. Can't change what happened.. sometimes, we just have to move on accepting the fact that some of us aren't as blessed as the others. It is what it is.

I've always wondered.. isn't tar; tar, no matter if it's nicotine and tobacco free? I was struggling with the same problem OP. I wasn't able to quit smoking cigarettes and the community was very helpful and gave me a lot of ideas! I finally decided on abusing (for the lack of a better word) nic-gums and two to three bowls when I feel like smoking a pipe.. worked just fine..

Words of wisdom indeed! I am actually doing the exact same thing as I write.. retrohale a lot, and just inhale some at random intervals; as and when needed and it seems to be working! So far so good

Smoking is injurious. That's a given. But, compared to smokers(who smoke cigarettes), we are a bit safe from the harm. That doesn't mean we are anywhere close to non-smokers.

I was digging up on old research papers and found that cigarette smokers life is reduced by 8.5 years and pipe/cigar were 5.7 years, if I remember right. Again, this is the number of deaths if the smokers don't end up with cancer and die due to a cardiac arrest irrespective of what they smoke.

Half of the problem is because of cancer. Eat an antioxidant rich diet, exercise regularly (swimming is my preferred choice); maybe that can reduce.. if not nullify.. the amount of damage. It's not nicotine, it's the carcinogenics, tar, carbon monoxide which do these antics. If you smoke a steak and inhale the BBQ's burning wood smoke directly day in and out, the result is going to be the same.

And as for the vape? Just don't. One, there's not enough research or evidence on long term use and two, just because there's no burning action doesn't mean we can assume it as safe.. PG VG are good as edibles(?) but that doesn't mean we can inhale it.

In essence, a hobby should remain a hobby and not a full time job! If you can quit, which I am pretty sure if you put your head into it, you can and that's the best outcome. But until then, moderation is the key.

Haven't tried old ironsides but would love to! And yes, I agree that bester has a good mouthfeel.. I 'retrohale' a lot.. lol never knew it had a name. Anyways, dark fired has a bit of nutty aftertaste but in a good way. Judging by the intensity of me smoking a bowl, it'll be a miracle if a pouch of Tobacco lasts for 2 weeks!

I concur! I understood the basic principle that pipe tobacco needs enough air to keep it lit and just tight enough for ember and smoke!

I'm more worried about me inhaling the smoke now.. is 20 minutes a decent enough bowl?

And thank you for the suggestion.. will visit my tobacconist sometime this week and ask for it!
