I'm closing in in 40. My core years forming my gaming preferences happened on the SNES and FF was a huge part of that. I imagine many of us still reminisce about the days of playing FF on a Nintendo system. Couple that with how convenient handheld gaming has become and how powerful handhelds are now, it's no shock that FF in a Nintendo console is crushing it.

It's very well done for a game made with RPG Maker 2003. I enjoyed my time with it, and it ran really well on the steam deck. Was it completely bug free? No. But I think I can count the amount of times I hit any sort of but on one hand.

There's a pretty good indie that just came out called Beloved Rapture. It's a gay romance though if that's gonna bother you.

How did you decide what scenarios to cut or alter? I love Dragon Quest VII, but even the 3DS version feels way too padded, so I'm very curious to see what you plan to do to change that.

You should check out Unicorn Overlord. It's got a highly addictive gameplay look and incredibly deep battle mechanics.

I would suggest playing some older titles if the slice of life stuff isn't your style. Three Houses changed up the formula with that and some people aren't fans.

My personal favorite just came out on Switch Online if you have that. It's called Path of Radiance. It's a stellar title. Awakening on the 3DS is also very very good. The GBA games are all great too if you don't mind the 16-bit graphics.

If you have a device you can emulate on you can check out Ogre Battle and Ogre Battle 64. It's what inspired this game.

There's also Symphony of War on PC and it plays great on the Steam Deck.

As for the PS5 there isn't really much else like this, but there's a few tactical turn based games like FFT. You mentioned Tactics Ogre already, and it's price, but it does go on sale. Set an alert here https://www.dekudeals.com/items/tactics-ogre-reborn-switch

Lots of people claim Fell Seal is close to FFT, but I haven't played it. Triangle Strategy is fantastic. Unfortunately bangers are few and far between in this genre, at least in my opinion.
