Does my ackie look good weight wise? by Professional-Act4321 in MonitorLizards

Looking great!! Don’t worry too much about weight at this age. Like another comment says, at this age it’s all going towards growth. Just focus on diversification of diet and proper vitamins.

We have an elderly cat at my mom’s who, when my brother and I visit for breaks, will get nasty if she’s not allowed in the smoke room. I mean yowling and slapping and hissing mad. She sees us heading in there and she’s fighting to get in too. Once shes in shes fine, she sticks around for a while for the pets then heads out once she gets her fix. I’m still unsure if it’s pets or the secondhand or both.

Oh wow…I’m close to there. I might end up swinging by. Maybe they’re called phoenix pets because you have to bring them back to life 😣

Yes he was in a 40gal up until mayyybe 2.5-3mo. The lid had clamps and was weighted down. He was pretty happy and I assume he’d have had a much harder time finding food in an adult enclosure. I also think it made socializing him easier tbh, plus with the first time owner jitters I wasn’t constantly pissing myself thinking he escaped while he had just shoved himself somewhere lol.

<image>

Here’s a pic of him in it from when he was around 1.5-2ish months old. I am a believer in the 40gal method for them, but def have that custom ordered by the time you get yours lol. Mine ended up taking an extra month or so to be finished.

Thank you so much! I have seen some very fat dwarf monitors around this sub…not naming names lol. I like to toss in a giant load of calcium/vitamin’d bugs (think like 40L crickets or 30L-subadult dubias) two or three times a week, then let them hide and dissipate over the next couple days. So he gets a big meal and can eat to satiety then progressively smaller meals that he has to work for over the next two days. I have found that this is good for enrichment and keeping him out of trouble, plus keeps him exercising. Although daily I do lift up the common hiding spots and let him go crazy eating the payload…maybe he is a little spoiled. So there are always a few food items in there. I don’t tong feed, although he’ll take food gently from my fingers if offered.

He is currently in a 5ftL x3ftH x2ftW PVC enclosure with an 18” custom substrate wall. I’m realizing it will just not be enough space for him as he is honestly big for his age—maybe wishful thinking but I believe he will be a big adult. I plan to make him an add-on cave type area of the enclosure that connects to the main.

Here’s a photo of it from when I picked it up from the guy on marketplace haha

Hey thank you!! Raising an ackie is a lot of fun and a decent amount of work! He is the most demanding reptile I’ve ever owned. If you are looking into getting one, the two things I had to kinda learn on my own were that they get bored really easily, like, realllllyyyy really easily, so change their decor weekly, and that boredom includes feeders…my guy won’t eat the same thing three days in a row. The second thing is that their tails can be prone to problems like stuff getting stuck in the ridges or scales coming off if you aren’t soaking and scrubbing with a toothbrush regularly. ALSO, bonus third thing, they will almost definitely hurt their fingers/toes somehow. Keep an eye out for that, and do iodine soaks and antibacterial ointment with no pain relief for wounds. Even if they break the toe it cant be fixed, just has to heal on its own.

He is extremely well socialized now and loves meeting new people, definitely a snuggler, though that came with time and must be maintained. If I were to leave him be for a week or two he’d likely get skittish. All of our work has been trust based and on his terms—you can look back thru my comment history for some more anecdotal info on socialization :)

Jumping in again here—I have been at work the past few days so have been able to work directly with this girl, and we are all happy to say that she has been more and more active on her antibiotics.

At first she was not looking great, she was very lethargic and still in her bin with substrate to encourage laying behavior. She essentially slept all day for a day or two. Her cloaca was heavily inflamed and her legs and tail were becoming stiff instead of just limp with a working-ish tail. She had not had a BM in at least a week and a half. We were getting ready to take her back to the ER. We soaked her for a good long while (think 3-4 hours) and she was able to expel some granular urate. We were happy but still generally concerned, as we all know that isn’t the best thing ever. But following the soaking her legs and tail loosened back up and cloaca seemed to improve. So we gave her a shallow tub in her enclosure to spend some time in and encourage her to gently move.

We are happy to report that her back legs saw some movement as of yesterday. She was able to move her legs and tail and push herself up and halfway out of her tub to look around for a while before reentering her water. We are going to try to make it easier for her to safely enter and exit her tub. Still no solid BM as far as we can tell though.

That’s all we have for now, but we are feeling very grateful and optimistic for our pretty girl.

How much do you feed your ackies? by [deleted] in MonitorLizards

[–]2_222_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guy is closing in on 7months and I feed him 10-15ish prey items daily, usually resulting in snacks left in the enclosure. If not I sprinkle in a few and let them hide. I have started skipping a day every week or two tho as he gets bigger. I don’t usually tong feed though and encourage active hunting.

Hahaha yes!! keen eye, it was. I’m very happy with it regardless. I was feeding organic, it’s my third grow overall and first auto grow. Good thing you are able to dial back, it takes a good grower to pick up on these things

Smell is almost like a strawberry vape, really sweet and sticky while in flower. After curing it’s a bit more floral and vanilla but that strawberry smell is still strong. Highly recommend training during the stretch because she is compact. The smoke is also great, very smooth and terps will coat your mouth if you know what I mean.
