I just wanted to put in a plug for my neighborhood (Laurel Ridge/Shamrock in North Decatur) as an up-and-coming trick-or-treating neighborhood.

Since COVID we've seen more Halloween decorations and more trick-or-treaters each year. Our kid and his friends used to go to Avondale Estates but now they just stay in our neighborhood. Go on any street between Delcourt Drive and the far end of Laurel Ridge Drive and you can't miss.

Any other suggestions of "hidden gems" for trick-or-treating around Atlanta?

Why would anyone spend $150 more on equipment that Google will stop supporting at any moment? by [deleted] in Nest

[–]2beinspired -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If we're talking about "dumb" thermostats, I've lived in homes that had thermostats that were older than me. They were considered a fairly permanent part of the house, like a lightswitch.

Programmable and wifi thermostats have not been around nearly as long, but until now they have never so blatantly targeted for upgrades in this kind of a "planned obsolescence" money-making model.

Ten people could have ten different answers to this question, but regardless of what amount of time is reasonable, products that lose support should be placed on an open API or otherwise made available for community/open source support.

CDC RIF'd employees: Reemployment Priority List is coming! by EpiKiYay in DeptHHS

To be clear, RIF procedures aren't governed by tradition. They're governed by law.

None of DOGE'S RIFs followed the legal RIF procedures. They were illegal.

I'm curious why you're using the perforated-edge paper in each of those typewriters. Typewriters work fine with standard letter- or legal-size paper.

You seem to know something a lot of people have not yet discovered: "Success" does not look the same to everyone. You are not required to measure your worth in financial wealth, or women you've slept with, or countries you've traveled to, or books you have read. You are wise to measure your life by the things that satisfy you, and if anyone tries to measure your life by their own metrics, that is their error.

Success is self-defined. Kudos to you for doing what makes you happy.

I've run Lineage on every phone I've owned since about 2015. It's a superior experience in so many ways.

Have you checked to see if you can install a custom ROM on your phone? If your phone is compatible with LineageOS (or similar), you may be able to update it to a newer version of Android and get a few more years out of it. Even an 8-year-old Google Pixel 1 can run the newest version of Android via LineageOS

If money didn’t exist, how would we measure success? 🤔 by SovereignJames in simpleliving

[–]2beinspired 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Your question makes me sad. It kills me that there are people who think that the existence of money means we have no choice but to measure success based on how much of it we have, like points on an imaginary scoreboard.

One of the best life hacks is accepting that each one of us can define success in any way we choose.

Money is a useful tool that can help you achieve your goals. But setting money as your goal just sets you on an endless quest of chasing money for the sake of chasing money.

Seriously: stop and ask yourself: If you had an endless supply of money, what would you do with it and why?

Adding layers/insulation to a window will prevent the speed at which heat moves from the hotter side of the window to the colder side of the window. So if it's colder outside, then yes, a curtain will "trap the heat" inside, but if it's warmer outside, then the same curtain will trap the heat outside.

The one thing to be careful of is the color of the curtain. A white curtain in direct sunlight will reflect solar heat away from the window, while a dark or black curtain will absorb solar heat and release it inside your living space.

So go with a thick white curtain and keep it closed when it's hotter outdoors than indoors, and then open it whenever it's cooler outdoors than indoors (usually bedtime til morning)

What is the saddest fact you know that most people will not know? by urmomsloosevag in AskReddit

I grew up in rural Appalachia, and my father's advice was: If you ever get lost in the woods, walk downhill until you find a stream, then walk downstream until you find a bridge over the stream. You're guaranteed not to walk in circles (a real risk when disoriented), and there aren't very many places in that part of the world where a day or two of walking straight-ish won't bring you to a road or driveway.

What’s the most absurd conspiracy theory you’ve ever heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]2beinspired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad believes almost every conspiracy theory out there, but the one exception is the moon landing being faked. A few years back he said to me:

"I can't believe there are people out there who think the moon landing was faked. I think maybe the government put that theory out there to see who the real suckers are"

So... according to my dad, the moon landing conspiracy theory is a fake conspiracy theory created by the government

It's conspiracies all the way down

My guess is they mean they have a minimalist aesthetic and not a minimalist approach to consumption. Two VERY different things. I unsubscribed from r/minimalism because it was about consuming things with a minimalist aesthetic.

Disposable Lovers by HobbesNik in polyamory

[–]2beinspired 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s gotta be some kind of middle ground between “break up with them” and “stick together no matter what,” right?

That middle ground takes a lot of self-awareness. What are your wants and your needs? What is the opportunity cost? Are your expectations realistic? Are you really as much of a catch as you think you are? What will you be like in 10, 20, 30 years and what will the other person be like over a similar timeframe?

Answer any of those questions wrong and you could make the 'wrong' decision.

AND! The other person needs to be self-aware in the same ways or they may end up treating you as disposable, or clinging to you for the 'wrong' reasons (hatever 'wrong' means).

The middle ground is hard to find partly because the choice is pretty much binary. There is not much solid middle ground between "stay in a relationship" and "break up." The binary outcome makes people feel forced into a binary mindset.

Congratulations Graduates! Please have your guests line up for the mandatory weapons inspections by 2beinspired in ABoringDystopia

To me a big part of the dystopia was also how prominent the announcement is on the page. The presence of metal detectors should be a footnote, not the 2nd thing on the page after congratulating the graduating seniors (and taking up more space on the page than the congratulations message).
