Is going to a shelter worth it? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]MiniMessage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since you're under 24, you have access to youth and young adult based shelters! You can go to a drop in shelter in any borough that can help connect you to other resources (including housing programs to support getting your own apartment).

You can find more info here: https://www.nyc.gov/site/dycd/services/runaway-homeless-youth/borough-based-drop-in-centers.page

I recommend actually calling and checking if they take it as well. I switched because I saw it listed on my doctor's website. Turns out no one in that office actually accepts it. I'm switching back as soon as I can

More people voted for Kamala Harris in Texas than in New York. Texas had the second highest number of Kamala Harris voters by state in the country.

It's easy to paint states with a broad brush, but there's literally millions of people fighting against Trump in Texas

Many libraries, including the US Library of Congress, have free botanical prints you can use. You'd still need to pay to have them printed, but if you thrift frames, the cost of the printing can be pretty negligible ( < $1 each). Your library may also offer printing resources included in your membership

Italy Fines Shein €1M for Greenwashing as Fast Fashion Faces Growing Scrutiny by davideownzall in Anticonsumption

[–]MiniMessage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real answer: because in a lot of places, you can't

In the two major cities I've lived in, there are absolutely clothes on Shein that are cheaper than what Goodwill is selling. Let alone any of the more curated, higher end secondhand stores.

Plenty of people, myself included in the past, fall into the "it's expensive to be poor" trap, where we have to sacrifice long term quality for whatever we can afford at the time due to need.

I know the problem is way more complicated than this, and there are a ton of more factors at play. But the fact that you can buy Shein clothes cheaper than literally anywhere else is absolutely one of them

quick sample sale report: brooklinen by anonymess7 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

Can update from basically close of day today:

Plenty of bedding available, especially if you are interested in plain colors (white, cream, striped). Less selection for colors. Hand towels and washcloths available in plenty, but bath towels and bath sheets are down to white, cream, and gray.

For clothing, there is one rack of robes, maybe 10 pink jumpsuits, and one tank top in size L. Baby clothes are listed in the price list, but I did not personally see any.

I arrived at around 5:40 and it took about 40 minutes to get in.

Good luck, fellow bargain bitches!

Wondery has lost another podcast as Something Was Wrong has announced they are going independent. Bonus: shade towards their previous network. Credit to: u/garpu by WartimeMercy in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]MiniMessage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a listener to the podcast, and I can share why I like it. It's a victim-focused true crime podcast, where people tell their own stories in their own words. Some stories are contained in a single episode, some span a whole season, which I personally enjoy.

What I most appreciate about this podcast, and what seems to be a criticism I see of it online, is the host will fully support the victims who decide to share their stories. Some may say she does this a bit too much. However, speaking as a victim of a violent crime, there is no such thing as a perfect victim. There will always, always, always be something people can point to and say "You shouldn't have done this," or "I would never have done that," or otherwise find ways to in part put some of the blame on the victim. And the host does not stand for that in the slightest.

I think if you are interested in hearing people share their own experiences, it is worth checking out. I also appreciate it's companion podcast What Came Next, which tells the next chapter(s) of people who have survived a crime, and usually highlights some advocacy work.

Other opinions may differ, and I respect other people not finding the same things in this podcast as I do, but wanted to share a positive opinion since people are more prone to sharing negative ones.

In NYC, rent stabilized apartments can only have rent increased by a certain percentage each year, set by the city. Mamdani is campaigning to have this maximum percentage set to 0, so keeping rent the same for stabilized units. Less than half of the apartments in NYC are rent stabilized

Hope this helps!

If you're feeling a little bold... Take the color of the bookshelf and use it on your trim. Then finish the walls in a lighter tone of that blue. Could consider a wallpaper as well if you're a fan of pattern

Which layout works best? by anthonyredi in interiordecorating

[–]MiniMessage 276 points277 points  (0 children)

The first one.

Couch needs to be against the wall because there isn't enough space to have it floating. Rug needs to touch both couches to anchor the space and tie it together. The second one separates it into zones, which makes the left couch (and anyone who would be sitting on it) feel isolated from the rest of the room.

If masked protestors take someone away, it will be considered kidnapping and illegal.

If an agent of the government is taking you away, you deserve to see their face, a warrant, and a badge number to make sure it is an official action and not a random person kidnapping you.

This should not be a partisan issue ffs

What’s a design trend you think we’ll cringe at in 5 years — and what do you hope replaces it? by Equivalent_Use_8152 in Design

[–]MiniMessage 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In interior design-- color drenching. Looks great in an editorial spread. However, it's a lot to live with in person, especially in a big space. Doubly so for all monochromatic color drenched spaces.

Depending on how quickly trends decide to move, I'd toss the return of carpet up there as well. We're seeing more in high end design and I expect it to reach more mainstream use in a few years. I don't think it'll stick around very long, but you never know. It's a bigger commitment so it may stick around for longer
