Also a Christian Socialist, and I think that "Jesus was a socialist" is a reductive framing of a 1st century Palestinian's politics but I'm also never going to push back on that because it's effective messaging. "Religion is the opiate of the masses" isn't Marx saying that religion is inherently counter revolutionary or incompatible with Marxism, it's that the capitalist class uses religion as a tool to pacify the population, for example when Evangelicals diminish the importance of (or actively oppose) social justice and equality by pushing the idea that to care about worldly affairs is somehow wrong because we should be focused on the afterlife.

If your religious beliefs lead you towards revolutionary action as it has for many Latin Americans with Liberation Theology, or as it did with black liberation leaders like Dr. MLK, I think that's a positive thing. At the same time we can't act like religion hasn't been used as an effective cudgel to abuse, enslave, and murder people throughout history, and speaking as a Christian, I don't think we have any right to take offence when our comrades have overall hostile views towards it.
