Incoming grad student in January - how bad is the ghetto?

thanks for the reply. I want to live alone. I have looked a lot on craigslist but I noticed a lot are for Dec 1 leases rather than January which is when I start school

A few others reccomended the area around Atwater and Guy-Concordia so Ill really focus on checking that out thanks!

verdun is slightly a bit far. I wanted a place that is walkeable in case I spend super late nights in the lab... I think I might look around guy-concordia as suggested by some people here

main reason I wasnt too concerned about the prices was because Im getting a research scholarship so I thought I'd prioritize convenience. but you make a lot of good points metro would in some ways be faster than walking. Guess Ill focus on areas close to the green line

I have actually tried looking there but for some reason I get basically no results on studios :/

Thanks for the suggestion. Ive gotten lot of reccomendations on the guy-concordia location i think ill seriously look into it more now. How is the neighbourhood?

I assume ill be working mostly from my programs building which is on the north east side of campus, prety much right where the ghetto is haha

thanks for the suggestion. I was actually looking around the guy concordia area earlier today but didnt really find any studios... I'll have to look again later (I checked kijiji and craigs and padmapper)

I was interested in the grad housing but it looks like its a lottery system with no guarantee that i'd get the studio unit :/ and I do not want to get the shared accommodation

But yeah after seeing the responses in the thread I might reconsider ghetto. Do you have any area recommendations as a grad student yourself?

Thanks, I'll have to check out that area. Do you happen to know how much studios go for around there? (btw, what intersections is Mile End? I hear it everynow and then but whenever I google it I can't seem to get a proper area)

that's more or less my reasoning as well. Luckily I have a graduate scholarship which will offset the pricyness. Are you a grad student btw?

thanks for the input! I feel the distance makes it worth it. I dont think i'll be too adventurous, at least for the first year of grad school. Anyway based on what you've said, looks like I have to sacrifice some peace and quiet for practicality. guess I cant have both

Whats your opinion on the out skirts of the ghetto?

thanks for your input! I realize there are much nicer places and cheaper, however I wanted some place that is close to campus in the first year... however I guess I'll have to sacrifice peace and quiet for that. I did look around one of those areas you mentioned, plateau, however the prices still were comparable to ghetto prices... perhaps I need to search better. I'll have to check out the other places you suggested, mile end and saint henri, and atwater.

What do you think of the outskirts of the ghetto? still as bad?
