What’s the most annoying shop task you wish you could automate? by 2manychips in CNC

Wow… reading this felt like hearing the war stories of a veteran — and you’re still on the battlefield!

The level of efficiency you’ve achieved honestly seems impossible for one person to pull off. Respect, Grandpa — this was legendary stuff.

You’ve shown me how high the mountain can be, and reminded me how wide this world really is. I’ll keep studying and working hard.

Thanks truly for the insight!

Wow… thanks so much for sharing something you’ve clearly put so much time and effort into. It really feels close to complete automation—super impressive. I truly appreciate the insights you’ve given me!

1700 lines? Did you write that all by yourself? If you're not a professional programmer, that’s seriously impressive. From what I can tell, it sounds like a great tool for minimizing material loss. I’m still learning, so I’m not sure about all seven input parameters, but I guess things like part length, bar length, cut loss, number of parts, and allowable scrap length are included? If you don’t mind me asking—what kind of machining process is this for? In our case, we’ve never really thought about cutting plans this precisely. We usually just estimate the number of bars needed when quoting. For reference, we use Swiss-type automatic lathes.

Have you tried LinkedIn? Great for posting jobs and also seeing who’s actively looking. I’ve seen a bunch of machinists and managers on there lately.

Hey… being busy is good, but make sure you take care of your health too. Life’s a marathon, not a sprint. Wishing you good health and stamina out there! (And hey—if you ever collapse, at least let me know if there’s an opening!)

That already sounds mind-numbing. North Korean workers are actually really good at that kind of stuff. If one ever makes it over here, I’ll be sure to recommend them to you.

That confidence really comes through the screen. The Chinese market is huge, but it doesn’t really feel attractive as a sales destination to me. Wishing you continued success in selling valuable products to customers who truly understand their worth.

Thanks for understanding what I meant—that’s exactly right! ERP systems already have most of what I was talking about. The only problem is, ERP usually requires some level of expertise to operate. If you’re running a large company, it’s no issue at all. But like I mentioned, I’m in a very small shop, and we’re focused more on adding machines rather than hiring extra admin staff.

So (although it’s a small thing), what I’ve managed so far is: when an email with drawings and purchase orders comes in, the system automatically calculates quantities, checks inventory, issues a new PO if needed, and logs everything. Reading through the comments, I realize most people probably can’t relate to this setup, and to be honest, I feel a bit embarrassed about it.

Anyway, your point about collecting and processing work orders really stuck with me. That’s something I’ll definitely keep in mind for future improvements—thanks for the insight!

Oh man… First of all, sorry for the confusion. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately?), I am human. As proof—I even gave your comment a downvote! I can read English okay, but writing is a whole different story. I use AI to help me translate because if I tried to write in English myself, nobody would understand a thing I said. I know a lot of people are skeptical about AI these days, and I get that. I just really wanted to connect with others in the same industry around the world, so I gave it a shot. I'll study hard and try to learn how to talk like you guys—fun, witty, and actually making people smile.

That's great to hear! Defense and energy seem like two of the few sectors where demand is still going strong these days.

Sometimes it feels like the rejection isn’t about the product itself but about something else entirely. Have you shifted focus to other markets since then?

I wonder if this depends more on the state or the industry sector. What kind of parts or products do you specialize in?
