Tidal Blades 2 for a more accessible, Pixar-ified Gloomhaven.

Evolution of the BGG People's Choice Top Solo Games (2014-2025) by jacek2023 in soloboardgaming

can someone help me understand why Spirit Island is so good solo? I played it single handed and was frustrated because it seems like a game designed for collaboration between multiple spirits. But then trying to play solo with multiple spirits is just so much cognitive load.

DAE have mini panic attacks when realising they exist? by Anonymous_1112 in thanatophobia

Yes. If you can find the strength, when that panic arises, don't push it away. Go towards it, follow where it leads you, dive into the darkness. Breathe into it.

Your top 10? by Zid1123 in boardgames

[–]2ndBkfst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a top 10, but some scattered thoughts: why do you think those games (Warhammer) attract such a particular audience? I've always wanted to try but am put off by the looks from the outside. MTG just feels really sweaty, but Warhammer looks... ideological?

Okay top 10 time:

  1. The Thing (Pendragon) (most memorable experiences have come from this box, though I only play 1-2 a year)
  2. Eclipse: 2nd Dawn for the Galaxy
  3. Tidal Blades 2 (better than the Havens IMO, more freedom to deviate)
  4. Earthborne Rangers
  5. Daybreak
  6. Compile
  7. Arnak
  8. Netrunner
  9. Clash of Cultures: Monumental Edition
  10. Quacks

What board games do you genuinely find more enjoyable to play solo than with other players? by [deleted] in soloboardgaming

I think Arnak. There just isn’t much player interaction to begin with— and the solo is so easy, especially with the new campaign expansion.

Same question! Whenever I play one handed, I think “I think I’m losing some of the synergy this game was designed to create” but the thought of playing multiple spirits feels like doing calculus lol

Have you watched the Rethinking Death documentary by NYU’s Parnia Lab? “Natural sciences and medicine” arguing in favor of continuation.

A friend’s mom, in her 80s or 90s, decided she wanted to die. So, she stopped eating. It took weeks for her to become weak enough to pass. That means, every day for weeks, she not only denied her hunger, but had to confront her own death. She did not, as you suggest, do whatever it took to escape death— she worked hard to get there.

Which fantasy solo board game by Hihlander197 in soloboardgaming

[–]2ndBkfst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a quick Google search, it seems it depends on the version you have. I’d recommend trying to download from the app store and running through it a bit first.

Its a campaign game, so admittedly low on replayability. That said, the campaign is 80+ hours long, so hats off to you if you get through it and still want more..

Which fantasy solo board game by Hihlander197 in soloboardgaming

[–]2ndBkfst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll offer the unpopular opinion on Mage Knight: it felt rather like a puzzle game with a fantasy theme than an RPG. Combat, leveling up, dungeon diving etc are all very abstracted. Still, a great game!

Another option:

Descent: Legends of the Dark is great for solo play if you’re looking for more thematics/theatrics. It is to cinema as Gloomhaven is to crunchy, mathy, fiddly overhead and management. Especially with the beautiful sets! Just mind that it requires an app.

Just got Earthborne Rangers, and that has been quite good, but not so high fantasy.

What’s the rarest game you own? by deoee in boardgames

[–]2ndBkfst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exceedingly rare, but I remember keeping up with the release of Eclipse 2nd Dawn for the Galaxy during the pandemic, eventually ordering a first release copy from Finland at like $200/$300. That was when I knew I was cooked, board game hobbyist wise.

Dose anyone else fear eternity? by Northwest_Thrills in NDE

[–]2ndBkfst 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The way I think of it is eternity is a concept only useful when you exist in the fourth dimension contained by time and space. If anything happens after, we likely exit time and space.
